Chapter 7 - The Betrayal Unveiled“David, please,” Vanessa begged, dropping to her knees on the plush carpet of the conference room. She crawled toward my chair, ignoring the expensive fabric of her designer dress tearing against the table leg. She grabbed my hand, tears streaming down her flawless, manicured face. “You can't do this to me! I am your wife! We swore a vow!”

I looked down at her. For three years, I had worshipped this woman. I had given her my home, my heart, and the keys to my life. I had trusted her to help me raise the most precious thing in the world to me. And she had used that trust to orchestrate a nightmare.

“You aren't my wife,” I said softly, my voice devoid of any warmth. “You are a parasite.”

“I was desperate!” Vanessa cried, her voice escalating into a hysterical shriek. “You don't understand what it’s like! You work all day, building your perfect little real estate empire, and I’m stuck at home playing nursemaid to a child that isn't even mine! She’s damaged, David! Ever since her mother died, she’s been needy, and clingy, and exhausting! I just wanted a life for us! I wanted us to be free!”

The sheer narcissism of her words was staggering. She truly believed she was the victim. She believed that poisoning a child was a justifiable solution to her boredom.

“Nora isn't damaged,” I replied, my voice dangerously calm. I leaned down, bringing my face inches from hers. “Nora is grieving. She lost her mother to cancer. She needed patience, and love, and safety. And instead, she got a monster who slipped drugs into her orange juice while smiling at her across the breakfast table.”

I pulled my hand out of her desperate grasp.

“Do you want to know the best part, Vanessa?” I asked, a dark, victorious smile finally breaking across my face.

She looked up at me, her chest heaving, mascara running down her cheeks.

“You thought I was stupid,” I whispered. “You thought because I was grieving, because I was exhausted, that I wasn't paying attention. But fathers pay attention, Vanessa. I noticed when Nora started losing weight. I noticed when her pupils were dilated. I noticed when you conveniently ‘forgot’ to set the security alarm on the nights Colin came over for your little strategy sessions.”

Colin looked up from his hands, his face a mask of utter despair. “You knew about the affair too?”

“Of course I knew, Colin,” I scoffed, sitting back in my chair. “You two weren't exactly criminal masterminds. You used your corporate credit card to book the hotel rooms downtown. Did you honestly think the CEO of a commercial real estate firm wouldn't recognize a fraudulent charge at a hotel my company literally built?”

Colin groaned, realizing the absolute depth of his stupidity.

“I let you play your game,” I continued, my eyes locked on Vanessa. “I let you think you were winning. I let you draft the fake medical documents, build the fake trust, and sit here today thinking you were about to walk away with seven million dollars. I did it because I needed undeniable, bulletproof evidence. I needed a paper trail so massive that no defense attorney in the country could ever save you.”

Vanessa stopped crying. The realization that she had been completely, utterly outplayed finally pierced through her delusion. Her features hardened, twisting into a mask of pure, venomous hatred. The beautiful, elegant woman vanished, replaced by a snarling, cornered predator.

“You bastard,” Vanessa hissed, her voice dropping into a guttural, demonic register. “You think you’re so smart. I should have given the brat a lethal dose when I had the chance. I should have let her fall down the stairs and snapped her little neck!”

Sarah Sterling let out a sharp breath, her professional composure breaking for a fraction of a second at the sheer depravity of the statement.

I didn't flinch. I had already accepted what she was.

“And there it is,” I said softly, looking at the ceiling. “Did you get that, Special Agent Harrison?”

The heavy mahogany doors of the conference room swung open.

May you like

Two men and one woman in dark suits stepped into the room, their badges gleaming under the recessed lighting. The lead agent, a tall, imposing man with a grim expression, held up a digital recorder.

“Loud and clear, Mr. Sterling,” Agent Harrison said. He looked down at Vanessa, who was still kneeling on the floor, completely frozen in shock. “Vanessa Hayes, you are under arrest for conspiracy to commit murder, child abuse, wire fraud, and extortion. You have the right to remain silent. I highly suggest you start using it.”
