Chapter 12 - The Viper's GalaYou do not defeat a parasite by negotiating with it. You expose it to the blinding light.

By Tuesday afternoon, the legal assault against the Hartwell Institute was already making waves in the financial press. Victoria Vance had hired a ruthless PR firm to quietly leak the injunction, attempting to frame Maya as a bitter ex-wife who had stolen corporate secrets to fund her new life. Investors were getting nervous. The board of directors at Maya’s institute called an emergency meeting.

Daniel and Maya stood before them, projecting an aura of impenetrable strength.

“The injunction is a frivolous, retaliatory strike,” Maya told the board, her voice echoing through the glass room with absolute authority. “Victoria Vance is attempting to leverage her husband’s corporation to settle a personal vendetta. I will not allow her to weaponize my life’s work. The patent remains ours. The clinical trials will proceed on schedule.”

“Dr. Hartwell,” one of the senior investors interjected nervously. “Vance Global has a legal war chest of billions. They can tie this up in court for a decade. Can you guarantee they won't freeze our assets?”

“I guarantee it,” Daniel stepped forward, his presence commanding absolute silence. Before he had met Maya, Daniel had been a silent partner in one of the most aggressive venture capital firms in New York. He knew how to destroy a hostile takeover before it began. “Because we are going to file a countersuit for tortious interference and corporate espionage by Friday.”

The board nodded, somewhat appeased, but Maya knew that legal promises were not enough. Victoria wanted a public execution. Maya decided it was time to give her one.

That Thursday, the New York Botanical Garden hosted its annual Women in Science Philanthropy Luncheon. It was the epicenter of high-society charity, packed with the wealthiest wives, CEOs, and socialites in the city.

Victoria Vance was the keynote speaker.

Maya did not have an invitation. She didn't need one.

At 1:00 PM, Maya walked through the grand double doors of the conservatory. She wore a striking, crimson tailored suit that demanded attention from every corner of the room. She looked immaculate, unbothered, and entirely lethal.

Victoria was standing near the podium, surrounded by a gaggle of sycophantic women, holding a glass of champagne and basking in her own perceived superiority. She wore a delicate, pale pink dress, playing the role of the innocent, benevolent philanthropist.

When Victoria saw Maya walking down the center aisle, her smug smile faltered. The color drained from her face. The ambient chatter of the room died down as the guests noticed the tension crackling in the air like a live wire.

“Security,” Victoria hissed to a nearby event coordinator, losing her aristocratic composure. “What is she doing here? She isn't on the guest list.”

Maya didn't stop until she reached Victoria’s table. She didn't raise her voice. She didn't cause a scene. She simply held up a sleek, white envelope.

“Good afternoon, Victoria,” Maya said smoothly, her voice carrying clearly to the surrounding tables. “I apologize for crashing your self-congratulatory luncheon. But since your lawyers failed to serve me properly with your little injunction, I thought I would return the favor in person.”

“You are making a massive mistake, Maya,” Victoria threatened, stepping closer, her voice dropping to a venomous whisper. “Leave right now, or I will have Ethan’s lawyers freeze your personal bank accounts by sunset.”

“Ethan doesn't know you filed the injunction, does he?” Maya smiled, a slow, devastatingly polite expression. “He doesn't know that you forged his executive authorization to launch a hostile strike against a pediatric research firm.”

Victoria’s eyes widened in sheer panic. “That is a lie. I am the Chief Strategy Officer.”

“You are a fraud,” Maya corrected her effortlessly. She dropped the white envelope onto Victoria’s table. It landed with a sharp smack. “Inside that envelope is a forensic audit of Vance Global Medical’s recent acquisitions. You didn't just target my patent out of jealousy, Victoria. You targeted it because your brother’s pharmaceutical startup is bankrupt, and you illegally promised him my intellectual property to save his sinking ship.”

The women surrounding the table gasped in collective horror.

“If you do not withdraw the injunction by 9:00 AM tomorrow,” Maya said, staring dead into Victoria’s terrified eyes, “I will forward these documents to the SEC. You won't just lose your husband's company, Victoria. You will go to federal prison for corporate espionage and insider trading.”

Maya turned her back on the stunned room. She didn't wait for a response. She walked out of the conservatory with the grace of a queen who had just decimated a rebel uprising.

Victoria Vance wanted a war. Maya had just dropped a nuclear bomb.
