Chapter 9 - The Letter He Finally Wrote

Ethan wrote Maya a letter.
Not an apology asking her to return.
Not a confession designed to make himself feel better.
Only the truth.
Maya,
I used to tell the world that I loved you because I noticed what you noticed.
But I never noticed what you needed.
I did not see your loneliness.
I did not see your intelligence because I was too proud of my own success.
I did not see that every time I asked you to forgive me without changing, I was asking you to disappear.
Daniel is lucky to have you.
Leo is lucky to have you.
And I am sorry that I learned how to become a better man only after losing the woman who tried to love me through my worst self.
You do not owe me a response.
— Ethan
Three weeks later, Maya replied.
Ethan,
Thank you for finally telling the truth.
I hope you keep choosing it.
— Maya
That was all.
But Ethan understood.
She did not owe him friendship.
She did not owe him closure.

Her peace was not a reward he could earn.
It belonged to her.
