Chapter 13 - The Echo of a Falling KingYou cannot hide a wildfire from the man who owns the forest.

By Thursday evening, the whispers of the confrontation at the Botanical Garden had reached the executive suites of Vance Global. Ethan Vance sat in his monolithic corner office, staring at the panoramic view of the city. His desk was buried under legal briefs and urgent messages from his public relations team.

The door burst open. Victoria stormed in, her face red with fury, her carefully curated image completely shattered.

“She is unhinged, Ethan!” Victoria shrieked, slamming her designer handbag onto the sofa. “Maya crashed my luncheon today! She threatened me in front of the entire board of the Botanical Garden! You need to call your legal team right now and authorize a restraining order!”

Ethan did not look at her immediately. He slowly turned his chair around, his face a mask of cold, exhausted realization.

“Sit down, Victoria,” Ethan said. His voice was completely devoid of the warmth he used to reserve for his first love.

Victoria paused, sensing the dangerous shift in the atmosphere. “Ethan, you have to protect me. She is trying to ruin my reputation.”

“I just got off the phone with the head of our legal department,” Ethan continued, ignoring her plea. He picked up a thick, manila folder from his desk and tossed it onto the glass coffee table. “He asked me why I authorized an emergency injunction against the Hartwell Institute. He asked me why Vance Global was attempting to steal a pediatric autoimmune patent from my ex-wife.”

Victoria swallowed hard, the color draining from her face. “Ethan, I was protecting our assets. The legal team found a loophole. Maya used marital funds—”

“Maya didn't use a dime of my money to build her empire, and you know it,” Ethan’s voice rose, a sharp, angry crack echoing in the silent office. He stood up, walking around the desk to tower over her. “You bypassed my authority. You forged my executive signature to file a fraudulent lawsuit. And you did it to funnel her research to your brother’s failing company.”

“She lied to you!” Victoria gasped, backing away. “She is manipulating you! She’s still in love with you, Ethan, and she’s trying to destroy our marriage!”

Ethan looked at the woman he had destroyed his life to be with. Twelve years ago, she had been his dream. Five years ago, she had been his escape. Today, standing in the harsh, unforgiving light of reality, she was simply a stranger. A greedy, insecure woman who had tried to tear down something beautiful because she couldn't stand the sight of someone else shining.

He thought about Maya. He thought about the way she looked at the gala. Serene. Powerful. Completely and utterly free of him.

Maya was not trying to destroy his marriage. His marriage had been built on a foundation of lies, and it was collapsing under its own weight.

“You are going to call the federal courthouse right now,” Ethan commanded, his voice dropping to a freezing, absolute pitch. “You are going to withdraw the injunction with prejudice. And then, you are going to pack your office.”

Victoria stared at him, paralyzed by shock. “Ethan... you can't be serious. I am your wife.”

“And as of tomorrow morning, you are no longer the Chief Strategy Officer of this company,” Ethan stated, walking to the door and pulling it open. “Get out.”

Victoria fled the office, sobbing hysterically.

Ethan stood alone in the silence of his empire. He had spent his entire life believing that wealth and control were the ultimate measures of success. He had believed that he could swap out the people in his life like interchangeable parts.

He walked over to his desk, picking up a framed photograph he kept hidden in the bottom drawer. It was an old picture of him and Maya from their first year of marriage. She was laughing, her eyes bright and full of a love she had freely given him.

He had broken her heart, expecting her to shatter. Instead, she had forged herself into a titan.

Ethan picked up his phone and dialed a number he hadn't called in five years.
