Chapter 6 - The Woman He Tried to Replace
Ethan requested a formal meeting with Maya’s ethics panel.
He did not ask to see Maya alone.
He did not send flowers.
He did not try to charm her.
Instead, he arrived with documents, attorneys, and a full disclosure plan.
At the meeting, he admitted Vance Global’s failures.
He promised independent audits.
He agreed to worker protections, environmental reforms, and board oversight.
One board member asked, “Why now?”
Ethan looked toward Maya.
She sat at the far end of the table, calm and unreadable.
“Because I spent too long believing ignorance protected me from responsibility,” he said. “It does not.”
The room was quiet.
Maya asked one question.
“Are you prepared to accept that your company may lose this contract?”
Ethan nodded.
“Yes.”
“And if your board removes you?”
“Yes.”
“And if the reforms cost more than the project earns?”
He took a breath.
“Yes.”
Maya studied him.
Then she looked down at the reports.
“It should not have taken losing your marriage to become honest,” she said.
“No,” Ethan replied. “It should not have.”
The panel did not immediately approve Vance Global.
But they allowed the company to reapply after the reforms were independently verified.
It was not forgiveness.
It was accountability.
