Chapter 1: The Long Walk

The heavy, soundproofed doors of the grand ballroom stood twenty feet away. To Julian, they looked like the gates to absolute freedom.
He didn't look back. He kept one protective arm firmly around his mother’s trembling shoulders, guiding her away from the blinding crystal chandeliers and the suffocating scent of thousands of imported white orchids.
Behind him, the silence of the room violently shattered.
"Julian!" Vanessa’s voice cracked, transforming from a sharp command into a hysterical shriek. "Julian, if you walk out those doors, we are done! Do you hear me? The wedding is over! My father will ruin you!"
Julian stopped.
Margaret tensed, her worn hands gripping the crushed stems of the red roses. "Julian, please," she whispered, her voice barely audible. "Don't ruin your life for me. I’ll leave. Just go back to her."
Julian looked down at his mother. The woman who had worked double shifts at a diner to buy his first tailored suit. The woman who had sacrificed her own health so he could attend an Ivy League university.
He turned around slowly.
Vanessa was standing at the end of the white marble aisle, her face red with fury, her fists clenched at the sides of her twenty-thousand-dollar custom gown. Her bridesmaids hovered behind her like terrified ghosts.
"We were done," Julian said, his voice terrifyingly calm, echoing clearly across the cavernous room, "the exact moment you treated the woman who gave me life like she was trash on your expensive shoes."

He didn't wait for her response.
Julian turned his back on the bride, pushed open the heavy oak doors, and walked his mother out into the cool, unfiltered air of the city. The heavy doors clicked shut, severing his ties to Vanessa’s counterfeit world forever.
