Chapter 9 - The Swiss VaultThe flight to Geneva on my private Gulfstream was tense and silent. Dominic Reed sat across from me, reviewing financial dossiers on Nathaniel Cross. We weren't friends; we were two apex predators forced into a temporary alliance.

"Cross isn't just a vulture capitalist, Victoria," Dominic warned, closing his laptop as the snow-capped Swiss Alps came into view out the window. "He’s ruthless. He uses private military contractors for his corporate acquisitions. If he realizes we are making a play for the original forgery documents, he will not hesitate to use physical force to stop us."
"Let him try," I said coldly, sipping my espresso. "I didn't survive Graham Whitlock just to be intimidated by a Wall Street thug."
We landed in Geneva just as the sun was setting over Lake Leman. A sleek armored Mercedes was waiting on the tarmac to take us to the Banque Privée de Genève, a fortress-like institution carved directly into the bedrock of the city, renowned for guarding the secrets of the global elite.
We walked through the pristine, marble-floored lobby, escorted by heavily armed Swiss guards, descending into the subterranean data vaults. The air was frigid, humming with the sound of thousands of servers.
We approached Terminal 404. Dominic inserted the biometric key into the port and leaned his face toward the retinal scanner.
A sharp beep echoed through the silent vault. The heavy steel panel slid open, revealing a secure offline hard drive.
"Download the files onto the encrypted drive," I instructed.
Before Dominic could press a button, the heavy reinforced doors of the vault room swung open.
"I wouldn't touch that keyboard if I were you, Mr. Reed."
I turned around. Nathaniel Cross stood in the doorway, flanked by four massive, heavily armed private security operatives. He looked immaculate in a tailored charcoal suit, his eyes burning with triumphant, malicious glee.
"How did you find us?" I demanded, placing my body between Nathaniel and the terminal.
"You aren't the only one who can track a ghost, Victoria," Nathaniel smirked, walking slowly into the room. "When Dominic’s offshore accounts suddenly went dormant last night, I knew you had bought him. But you’re too late. This is a private vault, beyond the jurisdiction of American law enforcement. My men are going to confiscate that hard drive, erase the servers, and you are going to sign over my twenty-two percent."
Nathaniel nodded to his guards. The four men drew their suppressed weapons, pointing them directly at Dominic and me.
"Step away from the terminal, Victoria," Nathaniel commanded, his voice echoing off the steel walls. "It's over. You lost."
I looked at the guns pointed at my chest. I looked at Nathaniel’s arrogant, victorious face.
And then, I laughed.
It was a cold, ringing laugh that echoed through the vault, completely unsettling Nathaniel. His smirk vanished.
"What is so funny?" Nathaniel hissed.
"You are, Nathaniel," I said, stepping aside to reveal the terminal screen. "You think like a thug. You think physical intimidation is how you win a corporate war. But I think like an architect."
Nathaniel frowned, looking at the screen. The terminal wasn't downloading files to a hard drive. It was running a massive, automated transmission protocol. A green progress bar hit 100%.
TRANSMISSION COMPLETE.
"What did you do?" Nathaniel demanded, panic finally piercing his arrogant facade.
"I didn't come to Geneva to retrieve the files, Nathaniel," I explained, my voice radiating absolute, uncompromising authority. "I came to verify them. Dominic didn't just unlock the server; he triggered an automated, un-hackable data dump. Ten seconds ago, the un-redacted proof of Richard Whitlock’s forgery, along with the shadow clause you tried to extort me with, was securely emailed directly to the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, the FBI, and the top editors at the Wall Street Journal."
Nathaniel’s face drained of every drop of color. He staggered backward as if he had been physically struck.
"If your men shoot us, they will be murdering a high-profile CEO on foreign soil," I continued, stepping toward him, completely ignoring the guns. "And the moment the SEC reviews those files, the shadow clause you bought is legally voided. Your five-hundred-million-dollar extortion plot is over. You own absolutely nothing."

I stopped inches from his terrified face.
"Checkmate, Mr. Cross," I whispered.
