Chapter 1 - The Invisible Architect

“Pull the corporate filings, Marcus,” I demanded, leaning over his shoulder as the glow of the laptop illuminated my dark, empty penthouse.
Marcus typed frantically, his eyes darting across the screen. For seven months, Claire had been operating a shadow corporation. Bennett Innovations. I scoffed, pouring myself a glass of scotch. Claire was brilliant, but she had spent the last five years managing our home, hosting my investor dinners, and smiling for the cameras. She wasn't a shark. She didn't know how to bleed a market dry.
“Daniel,” Marcus whispered, the color completely draining from his face.
“What?”
“She didn't just register a company.” Marcus turned the screen toward me. “She filed patents. Seven of them. Artificial intelligence integration protocols for global supply chains. Daniel... these are the exact algorithms our board rejected last year because you said they were too expensive to develop.”
My chest tightened. The scotch burned the back of my throat. I had dismissed those algorithms. I had told Claire, who had spent months drafting the initial logic in her spare time, to leave the engineering to my team.
“Who is funding her?” I asked, my voice dropping.

“Nobody,” Marcus swallowed hard. “Look at the seed capital. Ten million dollars. Traced back to a blind trust. The exact trust she walked away with yesterday when your divorce finalized.”
I stared at the screen, the reality of my negligence crashing down on me. While I was delegating my marriage to my lawyers and spending my nights in hotel rooms with other women, Claire was quietly, methodically building a competitor. She hadn't just left me. She had weaponized my own dismissal of her intellect.
