Chapter 10 - The Absolute Checkmate

The screens behind Claire instantly shifted to a stark, brilliant green.
The stock valuations vanished. In their place, a high-definition, live-feed video filled the massive displays. It was a feed of me. Standing behind the velvet curtain, wearing a cheap tuxedo, staring at my laptop in sheer, unadulterated panic.
The entire ballroom gasped, turning as one to look toward the service entrance.
Claire didn't flinch. She didn't look surprised. She leaned into the microphone, a cold, predatory smile touching her lips.
"Ladies and gentlemen," Claire announced, her voice ringing with absolute, terrifying authority. "I would like to direct your attention to the screens. What you are witnessing is a live, real-time attempt at corporate espionage, executed by my former husband, Daniel Morgan, on behalf of Elias Vance."
My blood turned to ice. My laptop screen suddenly locked, displaying a single, mocking smiley face.
"You really thought I left a legacy backdoor open in my own architecture, Daniel?" Claire’s voice mocked, though her face remained a mask of stone. "I designed that vulnerability specifically for you. I knew Elias would pick you up out of the gutter, and I knew your ego wouldn't let you refuse a chance at revenge. Your payload didn't drain my accounts. It acted as a homing beacon."
On the massive screens, the video feed split. The other half showed Elias Vance, sitting in his armored car outside the hotel, being violently pulled out of the vehicle by federal agents.
"By executing that code," Claire continued, addressing the stunned crowd, "Mr. Morgan just transmitted Elias Vance's entire shadow ledger directly to the SEC and the FBI. He didn't just fail to hack me. He just provided the irrefutable evidence needed to put his new boss away for the rest of his natural life."
The heavy wooden doors near my curtain burst open. Four armed federal agents swarmed me, slamming me against the catering table. The laptop crashed to the floor, shattering into pieces.
"Daniel Morgan!" the lead agent barked, wrenching my arms behind my back and snapping heavy steel handcuffs around my wrists. "You are under arrest for conspiracy to commit wire fraud and corporate espionage!"
As they dragged me out of the ballroom, I looked back one last time. Claire was standing at the podium, bathed in the flashing lights of the press cameras, completely untouchable. She didn't even watch me leave.

I was dragged out into the freezing Manhattan rain, shoved into the back of a federal cruiser. The sirens wailed, drowning out the last remnants of my pride. I had tried to play chess with a woman who had already bought the board, rewritten the rules, and locked the doors.
Claire hadn't just destroyed me. She had used my own desperate, pathetic ego to secure her absolute supremacy. And as the cruiser pulled away, plunging me into the dark, I finally understood the terrifying truth: the game was entirely, permanently over.
