Chapter 5 - The Empty Pedestal

By Friday evening, the hostile takeover was complete.
I signed the forfeiture documents in absolute silence, handing over the keys to the empire I had spent a decade building. The board of directors didn't even fight for me; they welcomed Claire with open arms, eager to attach themselves to the visionary who had just revolutionized the industry.
When I returned to my penthouse, the woman I had slept with a few nights prior was already gone. She had seen the financial news. The black cards had stopped working, and the illusion of my invincibility had shattered. She didn't even leave a note.
I walked into the massive, echoing master bedroom. The closet was still filled with the expensive designer clothes I had bought Claire to make her look the part of a billionaire’s wife. But the shelf where her favorite books used to sit was entirely bare.
I sat on the edge of the bed, burying my face in my hands.
I had spent years chasing the thrill of conquest, conquering rival companies, and sleeping with women who offered me cheap, fleeting validation. I thought I was the smartest man in every room I entered. I thought my wife was simply background noise—a soft, compliant safety net waiting for me whenever I decided to come home.

I didn't realize that the safety net was actually a web. And I had walked right into it.
Claire had taken her name, her boots, and her brilliance, leaving me with exactly what I deserved. An empty penthouse, a ruined legacy, and the devastating realization that the only person capable of destroying Daniel Morgan was the woman he had fatally underestimated.
