Chapter 17 - The Steel Bunker

The line went dead, leaving our flawless, stainless-steel kitchen in a heavy, suffocating silence. Michael walked over, wrapping his strong arm around my waist, grounding me in the immediate reality. Nathaniel Cross wasn't a street-level cartel boss or a corrupt politician; he was the ghostwriter of global technology, a man who literally owned the satellites orbiting our heads.

"He thinks he can walk into our home and nationalize my life's work?" I asked, a fierce, volcanic wrath igniting in my chest.

"He doesn't think, Claire. He acts," Michael said, his eyes scanning the frosted windows. "He’s placed a localized jamming drone swarm above this estate. We have no internet, no cell service, and no way to contact the authorities. He expects you to panic and plug in the hard drive to transfer the files."

"If he wants the algorithms," I whispered, reaching beneath the granite island to pull out my primary encrypted laptop, "he is going to have to bleed for them."

We instantly turned our indestructible twelve-square-meter kitchen into an impenetrable digital command center. The space wasn't just designed for culinary perfection; Michael had engineered it as a subterranean bunker. The 304 stainless steel cabinets didn't just hold dishes; they housed an entirely decentralized, offline proxy server bank that ran on a closed-loop geothermal generator.

"Boot up the offline mesh network," I commanded, my fingers flying across the keyboard in a blur of motion. "Cross thinks he severed my connection to the outside world. He doesn't realize this house is a network."

I bypassed the localized jammer by routing my signal through a series of micro-satellites I had quietly purchased under shell companies the previous year. As the connection stabilized, I didn't reach out to my legal team. I reached directly into the classified servers of Omnicorp’s primary Silicon Valley headquarters.

"He wants my AI architecture," I told Michael, my eyes locking onto the cascading lines of code illuminating the steel panels. "Let's see what he plans to do with it."

Within twenty minutes, I breached Cross’s personal encrypted ledgers. What I found made the blood freeze in my veins. Cross wasn't seizing my tech to protect his subsidiaries. He was planning to deploy my Virtual KOC networks to execute a massive, coordinated traffic arbitrage campaign designed to crash the global stock market. He was going to use my deepfakes to short entire nations' economies, creating a manufactured crisis that only Omnicorp could solve.
