Chapter 5 - A Billionaire’s Regret And A Queen’s Rebirth

Day thirty arrived quietly. The legal decree was stamped, signed, and finalized. I was officially a free woman, sitting on sixty percent of the liquid assets of one of the largest real estate empires in the South.

The fallout for Julian was catastrophic. A week after the divorce was finalized, Mia, furious at being discarded, went to the press. she sold an exclusive interview to a major tabloid, airing all of Julian’s dirty laundry, his financial vulnerabilities, and his desperate attempts to win me back. The humiliation caused Mercer Holdings' stock to plummet by twenty percent.

Julian’s board of directors forced him to step down as CEO, citing a lack of stable leadership. He was allowed to retain a seat on the board, but his power was stripped. He retreated into Hawthorne Manor, a massive, echoing tomb of a house that he couldn't afford to properly staff. He was alone with the ghosts of a life he had arrogantly destroyed.

I, however, had never been better.

I didn't hoard the wealth I had taken. I used a portion of it to launch a foundation dedicated to funding female entrepreneurs who were starting over after divorce or financial ruin. I took the business acumen I had used to build Julian’s empire and applied it to lifting up women who had been marginalized by men exactly like him. The foundation became wildly successful, and I found a profound sense of purpose that the country club charity galas had never given me.

Six months after I walked away from Julian Mercer, I hosted a small, intimate dinner party on the wraparound porch of Pine Hollow. The cottage was fully restored now, a beacon of warmth and light in the mountains.

Liam was sitting next to me. We hadn't rushed anything, but the steady, respectful foundation we had built was blossoming into something deeper, something rooted in absolute equality. He reached under the table, his rough, warm hand taking mine, his thumb gently stroking my knuckles.

“You’re quiet tonight,” Liam murmured, leaning in close so only I could hear.

I looked at the string lights glowing above us, the friends laughing around the table, and the undeniable peace in my own heart. I thought briefly of Julian, trapped in his cold mansion, and realized I didn't feel anger anymore. I just felt nothing at all.

“I’m just thinking about how lucky I am,” I smiled, squeezing Liam’s hand.

I had lost a husband, a mansion, and a life of hollow luxury. But in return, I had gained the one thing Julian could never buy, and Mia could never steal: my absolute, untouchable freedom. And that was worth more than all the billions in the world.
