Chapter 1 - The Forty-Eight Minutes That Ruined Him

I sat in Mara’s office, staring blankly at the wall as the audio file played. The first twenty minutes were exactly what I expected: the steady hum of medical machines and the muffled voices of nurses. Then, the door clicked shut, leaving only Jared and the surgeon, Dr. Evans, in the room.

"The abortifacient you instructed me to slip into her IV worked flawlessly," Dr. Evans's voice echoed from the phone speaker. "The fetus is completely gone."

My blood ran instantly cold. I hadn't miscarried naturally. My husband had murdered our baby.

"Good," Jared’s voice replied, chillingly indifferent. "Now do the hysterectomy. If she ever manages to conceive again before I can finalize the divorce and marry Courtney, my grandfather’s trust fund will go to her child. Courtney is carrying a boy. That boy will be the sole Harlan heir. Make sure my wife is barren, Evans. The half-million will be in your Cayman account by midnight."

Mara paused the recording, her face pale. I didn't cry. The woman who had loved Jared died on that operating table. In her place, a weapon was forged.
