Chapter 3 - The Baby Shower Trap
Six months later, Courtney was heavily pregnant. Arrogant and untouchable in his own mind, Jared decided to host a lavish "company gala" at the country club, which was secretly a disguised baby shower to soft-launch Courtney into high society.
He actually asked me to stay home, claiming the event would be "too emotionally taxing" for my delicate state. I gave him a weak smile and agreed. But the moment his Porsche pulled out of the driveway, I put on a stunning, backless crimson dress. I wasn't going to hide in the shadows.
Mara was waiting for me in the country club parking lot with two federal investigators she had brought into our circle. I handed the audio engineer inside the ballroom a crisp hundred-dollar bill and a silver flash drive, telling him it was a "surprise tribute video" for my husband.
