Chapter 9 - The Executioner’s GalaThe silence in the penthouse was heavier than a tombstone.

Beatrice Harlan staggered backward, staring at me in absolute, unadulterated horror. The woman who had treated human lives as disposable commodities had just realized she was cornered, bleeding out, and entirely trapped by the very woman she had tried to destroy.

"You insane bitch," Beatrice shrieked, her face contorted in an ugly, manic rage. "You destroyed billions of dollars!"

"I protected my family," I corrected, my voice ringing with a fierce, uncompromising maternal fire. "Something you never understood. You viewed my life as a casualty of your ambition. I view my family as an impenetrable fortress. And I will burn your entire legacy to ash before I let you touch them."

"Kill her!" Beatrice screamed to her bodyguard, completely losing her mind.

Before the massive man could even reach into his jacket, my security contractors drew their weapons, painting his chest with dual laser sights. The bodyguard slowly raised his hands, realizing he was entirely outgunned and outmaneuvered.

"I wouldn't do that," I said softly, not even raising my voice.

The heavy oak double doors of the penthouse burst open.

A dozen heavily armed federal agents from the FBI's Healthcare Fraud Division marched directly into the luxurious living room.

"Beatrice Harlan!" the lead agent barked, flashing his badge. "You are under arrest for conspiracy to commit medical battery, massive federal health care fraud, and international money laundering."

Beatrice didn't fight. She was completely paralyzed by the sheer, devastating speed of her own destruction. As the agents hauled the screaming billionaire to her feet and snapped heavy steel handcuffs onto her wrists, she shot one last, venomous look at me.

"You haven't won!" Beatrice shrieked as they dragged her toward the elevator. "The Harlan name will survive!"

"The Harlan name is a footnote in a federal indictment," I replied coldly, turning my back on her.

As the agents cleared the room, leaving the penthouse completely empty, I stood by the floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking Central Park. The war was definitively, permanently over. The architect of my nightmares had just been dismantled in less than twenty-four hours.

I calmly picked up my phone and dialed David.

"It’s done," I murmured, a profound, unshakeable peace swelling in my chest as I heard his relieved sigh on the other end. "The earth is salted, David. Nothing will ever grow from their roots again."

"Come home, Olivia," David whispered, his voice thick with raw, overwhelming devotion. "We’re waiting for you."

I walked out of the penthouse, leaving the wreckage of the Harlan dynasty behind me. I didn't look back. There was nothing left in that room but ashes.
