Chapter 1 - The Stranger in the Rain

The dark town car did not drive away. It sat idling at the curb, the rain slicking its polished black roof, until the rear door finally swung open.
An older man stepped out into the downpour. He did not rush. He held a silver-handled cane in one hand and a thick black umbrella in the other. He wore a charcoal bespoke suit that absorbed the gray afternoon light, and his face was lined with the kind of hard-won authority that money alone cannot buy.
He walked deliberately toward the bus stop shelter.
Emily did not look up until the shadow of his umbrella fell over her.
"Emily," he said. His voice was deep, gravelly, and carried a strange, anchoring warmth.
She blinked up at him, wiping the rain from her eyelashes. "Do I know you?"
"No. We haven't seen each other since you were three years old," the man replied, looking down at the cheap black trash bags resting at her wet shoes. A muscle in his jaw feathered with suppressed rage. "My name is Arthur Carter. I am your father."
Emily stared at him. Her mother had rarely spoken of him before her death, only mentioning that he was a man who had left to chase impossible ambitions.
"My father is gone," she whispered, her voice hollow. "He's just a name."
"I am a name that commands fourteen billion dollars in private equity," Arthur corrected gently. He reached down, ignoring the mud on the pavement, and picked up one of the trash bags. "And for the last eleven years, I have respected your mother's wishes to stay away. But I have always watched. And I will be damned if I let a family of overleveraged, arrogant frauds treat my only daughter like garbage."

He held out his hand.
"Get in the car, Emily. You're done crying over the Reynolds family."
