Chapter 3 - The Margin Call

It took exactly three months for the trap to snap shut.

Without Emily managing the household, the galas, and the quiet PR fires Jason constantly started, the Reynolds family’s public image began to fray. Without her meticulous attention to their private accounting, their financial mismanagement became glaringly obvious.

When the commercial real estate market experienced a sudden downturn, Jason and Victoria received the margin call they had been dreading. Their primary lenders were demanding sixty million dollars in liquid capital within forty-eight hours, or they would begin seizing assets—starting with the family company and the Reynolds estate.

Desperate, Jason and Victoria managed to secure an emergency meeting with the CEO of the shadow equity firm that had recently bought up all their debt.

They arrived at the towering glass headquarters of Carter Holdings in the financial district, practically sweating through their designer clothes. They were led into a massive, sun-drenched boardroom on the sixtieth floor.

"The CEO will be right with you," the assistant said, closing the heavy oak doors behind them.

Victoria paced the room. "We just need a six-month extension, Jason. Play to his ego. These private equity men love to feel powerful. Grovel if you have to."

Jason tugged at his collar, nodding. "I've got it, Mother. I know how to handle these guys."

The doors clicked open.
