Chapter 5 - Three Black Bags

"You can't do this!" Victoria shrieked, the aristocratic facade entirely shattering. "We are the Reynolds family! We are an institution! You are nothing!"

"I am the primary lienholder," Emily replied, sliding a thick stack of foreclosure notices across the polished table.

"You defaulted at midnight. As of this morning, Carter Holdings has seized your corporate offices, your investment portfolios, and the estate. Your accounts are frozen. You are entirely, completely bankrupt."

Jason fell into one of the boardroom chairs, burying his face in his hands, realizing the mistress in the red dress would be gone by sunset the moment she realized the money was gone.

Emily stood up. She signaled to one of her lawyers, who walked over to the corner of the room and returned with something folded in his hands.

He placed them on the table in front of Victoria and Jason.

Three cheap, black plastic trash bags. The kind used to drag wet leaves out of a gutter.

"Security will escort you to the estate," Emily said, looking down at the woman who had tormented her for eleven years. "You have exactly one hour to pack your personal effects. Do not take the art. Do not take the silver. Those belong to me now."

Emily turned and walked toward the heavy oak doors. She paused, looking over her shoulder at the ruined, pathetic remnants of the family that had tried to erase her.

"Pick up your garbage," Emily said, echoing the words that had once broken her. "And get out."
