Chapter 2 - The Memory of the Marble Table

For the first few weeks in Arthur’s sprawling Manhattan penthouse, Emily slept. She slept the deep, heavy sleep of someone who had been holding their breath for a decade.

But when she was awake, her mind constantly replayed the night before the courthouse—the night the final, private settlement was violently extracted from her. It was a memory perfectly immortalized in ads 4.jpg.

It had taken place in the Reynolds’ grand library. Emily had been seated at the massive black marble table, wearing a simple white silk dress, the pen trembling in her hand as she stared at the divorce papers. Standing over her was Victoria, her face twisted in a vicious sneer, a glass of bourbon in one hand while the other pointed sharply at the signature line, barking orders, degrading her, making sure Emily knew exactly how small she was.

But the most agonizing part of that night wasn't Victoria. It was Jason.

In the background of that very same room, completely unbothered by the destruction of his marriage, Jason had been lounging on the velvet sofa. Wrapped around him was his new mistress, a woman in a striking red dress, smiling triumphantly as she ran her hand over his chest. Jason hadn't even had the decency to look away. He had held the other woman while Emily signed away her youth, her rights, and her dignity.

You are nothing, Victoria had screamed that night.

Sitting in her father's study, surrounded by ledgers and financial reports, Emily finally let the anger arrive. It didn't burn hot. It froze solid.

"They built their real estate empire on a mountain of mezzanine debt," Arthur told her one evening, sliding a massive dossier across his desk. "They pretend to be royalty, but they are three missed payments away from total collapse. Carter Holdings can acquire their primary lenders by Friday."

Emily looked at the financial layout of the family that had thrown her away in trash bags.

"Buy it all," Emily said, her voice completely unrecognizable from the woman crying at the bus stop. "Buy every cent of their debt. And put it in my name."
