Chapter 18 - The Ambush at the PlazaThe Grand Ballroom of the Plaza Hotel was a masterpiece of intoxicating wealth, dripping in crystal, white roses, and the sheer, suffocating power of the global elite.

I wore a sweeping, backless gown of blood-red silk that clung to my curves before pooling like liquid fire on the marble floor. The Corazón de la Noche diamond rested against my collarbone, a heavy reminder of the empire I commanded. Julian stood beside me, looking like a god of war in a flawless black tuxedo.

We smiled. We drank champagne. We played the perfect, untouchable monarchs for the cameras.

But beneath the glittering facade, the ballroom was a militarized fortress. Half of the waiters were Julian’s undercover tactical operatives. The exits were sealed. The digital networks were jammed.

At exactly 10:00 PM, the heavy mahogany doors at the back of the ballroom swung open.

The ambient chatter of a thousand billionaires slowly died down as two men walked into the room.

The first was an older man with silver hair, carrying a silver-tipped cane, draped in an aura of terrifying, old-world arrogance. Silas Vanguard.

Walking right beside him, looking incredibly smug, was Andrew Kensington.

They didn't hide. They didn't skulk in the shadows. They walked directly through the center of the ballroom, parting the sea of elites, and stopped ten feet away from Julian and me.

"Alejandro," Silas said, his voice a gravelly rumble that carried across the silent room. He looked past me and locked eyes with my father, who was standing a few feet away. "You haven't aged a day. I suppose stealing another man's empire keeps the skin young."

My father didn't flinch. "You are trespassing, Silas. The rats are supposed to stay in the sewers."

Silas chuckled, leaning heavily on his cane. He finally turned his pale, icy eyes to me. "And you must be the famous Mariana. The girl who plays queen. You have a beautiful family. It would be a shame if you lost it tonight."

Andrew stepped forward, unable to contain his narcissistic glee. He looked at me, his eyes burning with a toxic, triumphant hatred.

"I told you I’d be back, Mariana," Andrew sneered, loud enough for the surrounding guests to hear. "You took my mother's house. You took my dignity. Tonight, I am taking your company. And if you refuse to sign over the controlling shares of the European merger right now, Silas’s men are going to pay a visit to your penthouse. I hear little Leo is a very deep sleeper."

The entire ballroom gasped. It was a direct, public threat against my child.

Julian took a half-step forward, his fists clenching so hard his knuckles turned white. I placed a gentle, restraining hand on his chest.

I looked at Andrew. I didn't see a threat. I saw a dead man walking.

"You always were incredibly stupid, Andrew," I said softly, my voice slicing through the silence like a scalpel.

Andrew’s smug smile faltered. "Sign the papers, Mariana. Silas has fifty armed mercenaries stationed outside your building. We own your security perimeter."

"Do you?" I smiled, taking a delicate sip of my champagne. "Silas, you really should have done your due diligence before you partnered with a man who couldn't even run a catering tray without dropping it."

I snapped my fingers.

The massive digital screens behind the orchestra suddenly flared to life.

It wasn't a live feed of my penthouse. It was a live feed of a massive, heavily fortified compound in Eastern Europe. Silas’s shadow syndicate headquarters.

Silas’s face instantly drained of color. He stared at the screen in absolute horror.

"While you were busy buying Andrew a cheap suit and planning this dramatic little entrance," I explained, my voice rising with absolute, terrifying authority, "my cyber-division bypassed your archaic firewalls. Julian’s extraction teams touched down in Romania three hours ago."

On the screen, heavily armed operatives stormed the compound, seizing the servers that held Silas’s entire financial network.

"Your offshore accounts are frozen," I stated, staring dead into Silas’s eyes. "Your mercenaries outside my building were quietly arrested by federal agents twenty minutes ago. You have no army. You have no money. You walked into a slaughterhouse, and you brought the butcher with you."
