At the hospital, Vanessa Bennett watched Ryan’s car disappear from the parking lot.

She had expected him to return.

He always returned.

That was how it worked between them. She called, cried, claimed she needed him, and Ryan came running. Sometimes he came with flowers. Sometimes he came with coffee. Sometimes he stayed all night beside her bed, telling her Clare did not understand him the way Vanessa did.

But this time, he had left without looking back.

A nurse entered with discharge papers.

“You are cleared to go home tomorrow morning,” she said.

Vanessa frowned. “Tomorrow?”

“Yes. You have a concussion. You need rest.”

Vanessa touched the bandage on her forehead.

The accident had not been as severe as she described. She had been driving too fast after arguing with Ryan over the phone. He had told her he could not see her because he was getting married.

Vanessa had panicked.

She had swerved into the guardrail.

And when she called him crying, he had come.

Just as she knew he would.

But now something was wrong.

Her phone buzzed.

Then she opened the private livestream clip someone had uploaded.

She watched Clare walk down the aisle.

She watched Adrien hold her hand.

She watched Ryan standing in the entrance, looking furious and powerless.

Vanessa’s face slowly lost color.

Clare had not waited.

For years, Vanessa had believed her sister was predictable. Clare was the dependable one. The forgiving one. The woman who would always clean up the mess after Vanessa made it.

But Clare had changed the rules.

And Vanessa had suddenly become the woman who ruined her sister’s wedding.

Her phone rang.

Ryan.

She answered immediately.

“Ryan—”

“You knew you were not dying.”

His voice was cold.

Vanessa sat upright. “I could have been seriously hurt.”

“The doctor said you had no internal injuries.”

“I was scared.”

“You ruined everything.”
