Chapter 5 - A Marriage Built on Truth

The next morning, Clare woke in Adrien’s penthouse overlooking Central Park.
For several seconds, she did not remember where she was.
Then she saw the ivory gown folded over a chair, her bouquet resting in a vase, and Adrien asleep on the sofa near the fireplace.
He had not shared her room.
He had not assumed that one rushed decision gave him access to anything she was not ready to give.
Something inside Clare softened.
Adrien woke when she moved.
“Good morning,” he said.
“Good morning.”
He sat up. “How do you feel?”
The question was simple.
But no one had asked her that yesterday.
Not Ryan.
Not Vanessa.
Not even some of the guests who spent the evening gossiping about her decision.
Clare pulled the blanket closer around her shoulders.
“I do not know.”
“That is an honest answer.”
She looked at him.
“Are you regretting this?”
Adrien smiled slightly.
“No.”
“You should probably think about it.”
“I have thought about you for a long time.”
Clare’s breath caught.
Adrien stood and walked toward the windows.
“I met you six years ago at your father’s charity dinner. You were standing beside a donor who kept interrupting you. Everyone was listening to him because he was loud. But you were the one who understood the foundation’s numbers, the programs, and the people we were helping.”
Clare watched him quietly.
“You defended a family whose application had been rejected,” he continued. “You did not know I was listening. You told the board that the easiest decisions are not always the right ones.”
“You remember that?”
“I remember everything about you.”
Clare looked down.
“Then why didn’t you say anything?”
“Because you were engaged.”
“And now?”
“Now,” Adrien said, “I will not rush you. We are married, but that does not mean I own your future. If you decide this was a mistake, I will help you end it with dignity.”
Clare felt tears rise unexpectedly.
Not because she was sad.
Because he was giving her something Ryan never had.
A choice.
That afternoon, Ryan arrived at the penthouse.
He stood in the lobby, demanding to see Clare.
Adrien’s security team informed Clare, but Adrien did not tell them to remove Ryan immediately.
“This is your decision,” he said.
Clare went downstairs alone.
Ryan looked exhausted.
“Come home,” he said.
Clare stopped several feet away.
“I am home.”
“You married him to hurt me.”
“No. I married him because you taught me what I would no longer accept.”
Ryan’s face tightened.
“Vanessa needed me.”
“You always say that.”
“She is your sister.”
“She is my sister,” Clare said. “Not your responsibility. Not your excuse.”
Ryan looked toward the elevators leading to Adrien’s home.
“He cannot love you like I do.”
Clare’s expression remained calm.
“You never loved me in a way that made me feel safe.”
Then she turned away.
May you like
Ryan called her name.
But this time, Clare did not stop.
