Chapter 7 - The Sister Who Finally Apologized

Vanessa came to Clare’s office on a rainy Thursday afternoon.
She wore no expensive dress, no dramatic makeup, and no expression of entitlement.
She looked nervous.
Clare almost refused to see her.
But something inside her said that avoiding pain was not the same as healing from it.
Vanessa entered slowly.
“I know I do not deserve your time,” she said.
“No,” Clare replied. “You do not.”
Vanessa nodded.
“I am sorry.”
The words hung between them.
Clare had waited years to hear them.
Yet they did not fix anything.
“I was jealous of you,” Vanessa continued. “Not because Ryan loved you. But because you always seemed stronger than me.”
Clare looked at her sharply.
“I did not feel strong.”
“I know. That is what made it worse. You were scared, too, but you kept going. Everyone called me fragile, so I acted fragile. Everyone rescued me, so I learned to demand rescue.”
“And Ryan?”
Vanessa lowered her eyes.
“I liked being chosen by him.”
Clare felt the old pain rise in her chest.
“You let me plan a wedding while you knew he was emotionally involved with you.”
“Yes.”
“You watched me trust him.”
“Yes.”
“Then you called him on the one day he was supposed to choose me.”
Vanessa began crying.
“I know.”
Clare sat back.
“I cannot forgive you today.”
“I am not asking you to.”
“But if you truly want to change,” Clare said, “stop building your life around being saved. Save yourself.”
Vanessa nodded through tears.
“I am trying.”
It was not a perfect reconciliation.
It was not instant.

But it was honest.
And honesty, Clare had learned, was where real healing began.
