Chapter 11 - The Viper in the VaultPeace is a fragile ecosystem. When you build a sanctuary on the ashes of a fallen empire, you must never forget that the scent of smoke attracts scavengers.

Six months had passed since the fall of Vittorio DeLuca and the collapse of the Moretti syndicate. Six months of immaculate, unbroken serenity. The Connecticut estate had been fully transformed. The Serena Moretti Foundation for Women was thriving, offering legal, financial, and physical protection to those escaping the kind of monsters I had once been married to.

Nico was three years old, running across the manicured lawns with a joyous, unburdened laugh. I watched him from the terrace, a mug of black coffee in my hand.

I was no longer looking over my shoulder. But in the world of global organized crime, a vacuum of power never remains empty.

"Serena."

I turned. Marcus stood in the doorway of the terrace. Over the past six months, he had transitioned from my head of security to the Chief Operating Officer of my foundation. He wore a tailored dark suit, but his posture was rigid. The relaxed, quiet man I had come to trust implicitly was gone. The soldier had returned.

"What is it?" I asked, my blood instantly cooling to a calculated, icy calm.

"We have a breach," Marcus said, stepping onto the stone patio. "Not physical. Financial. Our primary escrow accounts for the foundation were frozen an hour ago by a federal injunction. And a black SUV just pulled up to the front gate. The passenger is demanding to speak with you."

"Who is it?"

"Alessio Romano."

The name hit me like a physical blow. Alessio Romano was a ghost in the financial world. He was a ruthless, European-based venture capitalist who allegedly managed the "clean" money for the old-world syndicates. DeLuca had been the muscle of the underworld. Romano was the bank.

"Let him in," I said, setting my coffee mug down. "And Marcus? Arm the perimeter."

Ten minutes later, I stood in the grand foyer of the estate. The heavy oak doors swung open.

Alessio Romano walked in. He was in his early forties, devastatingly handsome, draped in a bespoke Tom Ford suit that cost more than a luxury car. He exuded an aura of suffocating, untouchable wealth.

"Serena," Alessio smiled, a cold, reptilian stretching of his lips. He looked around the grand foyer. "What a beautiful home. It is a tragedy you are going to lose it."

I did not flinch. I did not step back.

"You are trespassing, Alessio," I said, my voice echoing with a chilling, matriarchal authority. "And you have exactly sixty seconds to state your business before my security removes you from the property."

"I am not trespassing. I am inspecting my collateral," Alessio chuckled, pulling a thick, legal envelope from his jacket and dropping it onto the foyer table. "When you dismantled DeLuca and seized the legitimate assets of your ex-husband's empire, you acquired their debts. DeLuca borrowed fifty million dollars from my European syndicates to fund his war against you."

He stepped closer, his dark eyes locking onto mine.

"You owe me fifty million dollars, Serena. And because you humiliated my network in the American press, I am calling the debt due. Today."

"I don't owe you a dime," I replied effortlessly. "Those debts were nullified in federal court."

"I don't play by federal rules," Alessio whispered. "If you do not transfer the deeds of this estate and the foundation to my holding company by Friday, I will release the fabricated documents in that envelope to the SEC. They 'prove' that your foundation is laundering money. The government will seize your son, freeze your life, and put you in a cage."

He turned and walked toward the door.

"You survived the butchers, Serena," Alessio called over his shoulder. "Let’s see if you can survive the bank."

The heavy doors clicked shut. Marcus stepped up beside me, his jaw clenched tight. "I’ll call the legal team. We fight the injunction."

"No," I said, picking up the envelope. The terrified girl I used to be would have panicked. The woman I had become saw only a chessboard. "Alessio wants to play with audits? Fine. Let’s show him what a real audit looks like. We are going to war."
