Chapter 17 - The Federal ViperWhen a predator threatens your child, you do not lock the doors and hide in the basement. You step out onto the porch, find their supply lines, and burn them to the ground.

By midnight, the library of the Connecticut estate had been transformed into a militarized war room. Marcus and I sat at the massive oak desk, surrounded by laptops, encrypted servers, and three of the most ruthless corporate litigators in New York.
"Sterling is arrogant," I said, staring at the digital web of offshore routing numbers projected on the screen. "He thinks he has us cornered because he holds a federal badge. He assumes I will panic and offer him a settlement to keep Nico’s name out of the press."
"He covered his tracks perfectly," my lead attorney sighed, rubbing his tired eyes. "Sterling’s operative, Clara, has already uploaded fabricated transaction logs to your foundation's servers. If Sterling takes this to a federal judge tomorrow, the injunction will be immediate. Your accounts will be frozen, and Child Protective Services will be dispatched to this house."
"We need the IP addresses of the fabricated logs," Marcus said, pacing behind my chair. He looked dangerous—a lethal shadow pacing a cage. "If we can prove Clara spoofed your signature from a DOJ-issued device, the subpoena is nullified, and Sterling goes down for federal perjury."
For the next forty-eight hours, we did not sleep. We survived on adrenaline, black coffee, and a fierce, blinding determination to eradicate the threat permanently.
It was 3:00 AM on Thursday morning. The snow was still falling heavily against the glass.
Suddenly, my lead cybersecurity analyst let out a sharp gasp.
"I broke the firewall on the spoofed logs," the analyst announced, his voice vibrating with adrenaline.
Marcus and I immediately stood up, leaning over his shoulder.
"The logs weren't just uploaded from Clara’s device," the analyst explained, pointing to the hidden metadata embedded in the code. "They were remotely generated and approved by a private, secure server located in Manhattan. Specifically, Richard Sterling’s private residence."
"Got him," I breathed, the sheer magnitude of the victory washing over me.
"It gets better," the analyst smiled, tapping another key. "Sterling didn't just forge your signature. He wired fifty thousand dollars in taxpayer money to Clara’s offshore account to pay for her silence. He is laundering government money."
Marcus let out a low, appreciative whistle. He looked at me, a dangerous, awe-struck smile breaking across his handsome face. "He didn't just hand you a knife, Serena. He handed you a guillotine."
"Can we send this to the Attorney General?" the lead lawyer asked, reaching for his phone.
"No," I said softly.
The room stopped, looking at me in confusion.
"If we send this to the DOJ quietly, Sterling will hire expensive lawyers, claim his home network was hacked by the syndicate, and tie it up in court for five years," I explained, my voice dropping to a freezing, absolute calm. "He will drag my son’s name through the media while he fights the charges. We cannot defeat him in the shadows."
I walked over to the window, looking out at the glittering, snow-covered estate.
"Tomorrow night is the Manhattan Justice Gala," I said. "Richard Sterling is the keynote speaker. He is receiving an award for his 'crusade against organized crime.'"

I turned back to the room, the terrified woman of the past entirely erased by the Iron Empress I had become.
"We are not going to court," I commanded, my eyes blazing with unyielding fire. "We are going to the gala. We are going to execute him on his own stage."
