Chapter 18 - The Ambush at the GalaThere is a distinct difference between legal defense and a public slaughter. In a courtroom, the truth is filtered through bureaucracy. But in front of the press and the political elite, the truth belongs to whoever holds the heaviest ammunition.

The grand ballroom of the Plaza Hotel was a masterpiece of crystal chandeliers, gold leaf, and sheer, intoxicating power. The elite of New York’s legal and political sectors mingled, entirely unaware that the foundation of their world was about to be ripped out from beneath them.

Richard Sterling stood near the main stage, wearing a stunning bespoke tuxedo. He was surrounded by sycophantic senators and judges, basking in the glow of his untouchable superiority. He believed he had won. He believed that by tomorrow, my foundation would be seized and my son would be in federal custody.

He was incredibly, fatally wrong.

Marcus and I did not have invitations. We didn't need them.

I wore a sweeping, floor-length gown of midnight blue silk. I did not look like a desperate mother. I looked like an apex predator. Marcus walked beside me in a flawless black tuxedo, radiating an aura of lethal, terrifying power that forced the crowds to physically part for us.

When Sterling saw me walking down the center aisle, his smug smile faltered for a fraction of a second. He whispered something to his federal security detail, who immediately began moving toward us.

But they were too late.

I stepped onto the edge of the stage, pulling a sleek, encrypted tablet from my velvet clutch.

"Good evening, Richard," I projected my voice, sharp and crystal clear, cutting through the ambient noise of the gala. Hundreds of heads turned toward us. The flashbulbs of the press instantly erupted.

"Security!" Sterling hissed, losing his composure entirely. "Remove this woman! She is the subject of an active federal investigation!"

"I wouldn't do that, Richard," I said, my voice echoing through the massive room. "Unless you want me to explain to your lovely guests exactly how you funded your undercover operative."

"You are making a massive mistake, Serena," Sterling threatened, stepping closer, his voice dropping to a venomous whisper. "Leave right now, or I will have your son taken tonight."

"You will never touch my son," I smiled smoothly. "Because while you were busy trying to frame my foundation for embezzlement, my forensic accountants were auditing your home servers."

Sterling turned the color of ash.

I tapped a single button on my tablet.

The massive digital screens behind the stage—screens meant to display the Department of Justice seal—suddenly flickered to life. They shifted to display the master ledger of Sterling’s private offshore accounts, complete with the routing numbers and Clara’s name highlighted in bright red.

"Ladies and gentlemen," I announced, turning to face the shocked crowd. "U.S. Attorney Richard Sterling is not a pioneer of justice. He is the architect of a massive extortion scheme. He fabricated federal evidence to seize a blind trust, and he illegally wired fifty thousand dollars in taxpayer money to bribe an operative to frame a domestic abuse charity."

The ballroom erupted in chaos. Gasps echoed through the room. Senators physically backed away from Sterling as if he were contagious.

"This is a cyber attack!" Sterling shrieked, his mask completely destroyed. "She hacked my servers! This is defamation!"

"It is an indictment," I corrected him, staring dead into his panicked eyes.

The heavy mahogany doors at the back of the ballroom burst open.

Two dozen agents from the FBI’s Office of the Inspector General poured into the room, their badges flashing under the chandeliers. They bypassed the crowd completely and marched straight toward the stage.

"Richard Sterling," the lead agent boomed, pulling a pair of heavy steel handcuffs from his belt. "You are under arrest for federal extortion, wire fraud, and perjury. Put your hands behind your back."

Sterling stumbled backward, completely paralyzed. The arrogant, untouchable prosecutor who had tried to steal my child was reduced to a pathetic, shivering criminal in front of every major news outlet on the East Coast.

As the agents wrenched his arms behind his back, he glared at me with pure, unadulterated hatred.

"You ruined me!" he screamed as they dragged him away.

"No, Richard," I said softly, my voice devoid of any pity. "I just balanced the books."
