Chapter 14 - The Ambush at the WaldorfThere is no sound quite as satisfying as the shattering of a tyrant’s ego.

The grand ballroom of the Waldorf Astoria was a masterpiece of crystal chandeliers, gold leaf, and sheer, intoxicating wealth. Alessio Romano was hosting the annual Global Finance Summit. The elite of New York high society mingled, sipping champagne, entirely unaware that the foundation of their world was about to be ripped out from underneath them.
Alessio stood near the main stage, surrounded by sycophantic politicians and billionaires. He wore a stunning bespoke tuxedo, basking in the glow of his untouchable superiority. He believed he had won. He believed that by tomorrow, I would sign over my estate.
He was incredibly, fatally wrong.
Marcus and I did not have invitations. We didn't need them.
I wore a sweeping, backless gown of blood-red silk. I did not look like a victim. I looked like an apex predator stepping onto a battlefield. Marcus walked beside me in a flawless black tuxedo, radiating an aura of lethal, terrifying power that forced the crowds to physically part for us.
We walked directly down the center aisle of the ballroom.
When Alessio saw me, his smug smile faltered for a fraction of a second. He whispered something to his private security guards, who immediately began moving toward us.
But they were too late.
I stepped onto the edge of the stage, pulling a sleek, encrypted tablet from my velvet clutch.
"Good evening, Alessio," I projected my voice, sharp and crystal clear, cutting through the ambient noise of the gala. Hundreds of heads turned toward us. The flashbulbs of the financial press instantly erupted.
"Security," Alessio hissed, losing his aristocratic composure entirely. "Remove this woman. She is trespassing!"
"I wouldn't do that, Alessio," I said, my voice echoing through the massive room. "Unless you want me to explain to your lovely guests exactly how you funded your new European real estate ventures."
"You are making a massive mistake, Serena," Alessio threatened, stepping closer to the edge of the stage, his voice dropping to a venomous whisper. "Leave right now, or the injunction becomes permanent."
"The injunction was lifted ten minutes ago," I smiled smoothly. "Because while you were busy planning this party, I used Lucian’s cipher to audit your servers."
Alessio turned the color of ash.
I tapped a single button on my tablet.
The massive digital screens behind the stage suddenly flickered to life. They shifted to display the master ledger of Alessio’s offshore syndicates, exposing billions of dollars in cartel money.
"Ladies and gentlemen," I announced, turning to face the shocked crowd. "Alessio Romano is not a venture capitalist. He is the architect of a global money-laundering syndicate. The billions he claims to manage are simply washed funds from illicit organizations."
The ballroom erupted in chaos. Gasps echoed through the room. Senators physically backed away from Alessio as if he were contagious.
"This is a cyber attack!" Alessio shrieked, his mask completely destroyed. "She hacked my servers! This is corporate defamation!"
"It is an indictment," I corrected him, staring dead into his panicked eyes.
The heavy mahogany doors at the back of the ballroom burst open.
Two dozen federal agents from the FBI and the Department of Homeland Security poured into the room, their badges flashing under the chandeliers. They bypassed the crowd completely and marched straight toward the stage.
"Alessio Romano," the lead agent boomed, pulling a pair of heavy steel handcuffs from his belt. "You are under arrest for international money laundering, racketeering, and extortion. Put your hands behind your back."
Alessio stumbled backward, completely paralyzed. The untouchable titan of finance was reduced to a pathetic, shivering criminal in front of every major news outlet on the East Coast.
As the agents wrenched his arms behind his back, he glared at me with pure, unadulterated hatred.
May you like
"You ruined me!" he screamed as they dragged him away.
"No, Alessio," I said softly, my voice devoid of any pity. "I just closed your account."
