Chapter 23 - The Ambush at the SummitThere is a moment in every war when the tyrant realizes his crown is made of paper.

Vincenzo’s fingers hovered over his laptop keyboard. His enforcers shifted nervously in the background, their loyalty instantly wavering at the mention of the Russian syndicates. Vincenzo was a sociopath, but he was a pragmatic one. He knew that the wrath of a betrayed cartel was infinitely more dangerous than the loss of an American heir.
"You think you have won," Vincenzo hissed, his eyes locked onto mine with pure, unadulterated hatred as he initiated the legal withdrawal protocol. "You think you can just waltz into my city, blackmail me, and fly back to your little estate?"
"It isn't blackmail, Vincenzo. It is a hostile acquisition," I corrected him effortlessly.
The digital screens in the office flashed green. The international custody petition was permanently revoked. Nico was legally, unconditionally safe.
"It's done," Vincenzo spat, slamming his laptop shut. "Now, give me the master ledger and get out of my building before I have my men throw you off the roof."
I looked at the flash drive on his desk. Then, I looked up at him, a slow, devastating smile spreading across my face.
"I have a confession, Vincenzo," I said softly.
He frowned, a flicker of profound unease crossing his face. "What?"
"I told you I bypassed your firewall to access your master ledger," I explained, my voice echoing with lethal, matriarchal authority. "That was a lie. Your encryption is flawless. It would have taken my team six months to crack it."
Vincenzo froze. The blood completely drained from his face. "Then... what is on that drive?"
"A recipe for Connecticut clam chowder," Marcus spoke up, his voice a low, mocking rumble from behind me.
"You bluffed me," Vincenzo whispered, stumbling backward, the reality of his monumental failure crushing the air out of his lungs. "You didn't have the ledger. You tricked me into surrendering the claim!"
"I didn't trick you. I played your ego," I said, stepping away from the desk. "You were so arrogant, so convinced of your own untouchable power, that the mere suggestion of exposure terrified you into submission. You handed me my son’s freedom because you are a coward, Vincenzo."
"Kill them!" Vincenzo screamed, completely unhinged. "Don't let them leave this room!"
The enforcers reached for their weapons.
They didn't even clear leather.
Marcus moved with a speed that defied human logic. In three seconds, the first enforcer was disarmed and driven violently into the mahogany desk. The second took a brutal strike to the throat, collapsing to the floor. The third backed away, raising his hands in surrender when Marcus leveled a suppressed weapon directly at his chest.
"Give me a reason," Marcus growled, his eyes pitch black with lethal intent. The enforcer dropped his gun.
The heavy oak doors at the back of the office burst open.
But it wasn't Vincenzo’s backup that poured into the room. It was a dozen heavily armed officers from Interpol and the Italian Guardia di Finanza. They marched directly into the penthouse, weapons drawn, securing the perimeter in seconds.
Vincenzo stared at them in absolute horror. "What is this?!"
"I didn't need your master ledger to destroy you, Vincenzo," I said, turning to face him one last time. "When you executed the bribe to the southern Italian judge to file that fraudulent custody petition, you used funds that were flagged by the US Treasury Department. The moment you engaged the American legal system, you officially committed an act of international wire fraud on a federally monitored network. I triggered the Interpol alarm the second I landed in Milan."
The lead inspector marched up to the desk, pulling a pair of steel handcuffs from his belt.
"Vincenzo Moretti," the inspector boomed. "You are under arrest for international money laundering, extortion, and judicial bribery."
Vincenzo fought wildly as the officers wrenched his arms behind his back. The polished, aristocratic shadow-banker was reduced to a pathetic, screaming criminal in a matter of seconds.
"You are a monster!" Vincenzo shrieked as they dragged him past me. "You ruined my family!"
"No, Vincenzo," I said softly, my voice devoid of any pity. "I just erased it."
I turned my back on him. Marcus offered his arm, his eyes shining with an intense, protective adoration that took my breath away.

"Ready to go home, Mrs. Vance?" Marcus asked, a brilliant smile touching his lips.
"Take me to my son," I replied.
