Chapter 10 - The Final Verdict

The screens displayed the raw, undeniable digital receipts of the transaction between Victor Sterling and Bradley. But more devastatingly, the screens displayed the certified, federal engineering reports proving the South Loop project was structurally flawless, side-by-side with Bradley's forged documents.
"What is this?" Sterling hissed, whirling around to look at the screens, the color completely draining from his face.
Claire gracefully ascended the stairs to the stage. The crowd parted for her like the Red Sea. She didn't take the microphone from Sterling; she didn't need to. Her voice carried with the absolute, uncompromising weight of an untouchable queen.
"You didn't buy my toxic debt, Victor," Claire said, her voice echoing clearly through the silent, captivated room. "You bought a forged federal document. Bradley didn't give you the real projections; he gave you the fraudulent reports he created three years ago to embezzle company funds. And by utilizing them to attempt a hostile corporate takeover and manipulate the stock market, you just made yourself an accessory to federal wire fraud."
I staggered backward, my knees practically buckling beneath me. The flash drive. The secret files. She knew. She had known all along, and she had deliberately left the door open for me to walk through and hang myself.
"You set us up," Sterling breathed, his polished facade entirely shattering as he looked at the undeniable evidence projected behind him. He turned his furious, dead eyes on me. "You idiot. You gave me fabricated files!"
"I didn't know!" I stammered, raising my hands defensively, my heart hammering a frantic, terrified rhythm against my ribs. "Claire, please—"
"FBI! Nobody move!"
The command thundered through the grand ballroom. From the stairwells and the main entrances, dozens of heavily armed federal agents from the White Collar Crimes Division swarmed the room. Laser sights danced across Sterling’s bespoke suit and my cheap rented tuxedo.
"Victor Sterling, you are under arrest for corporate espionage, market manipulation, and accessory to wire fraud," the lead agent announced, marching onto the stage and violently pulling Sterling’s arms behind his back, snapping heavy steel handcuffs onto his wrists.
Two more agents grabbed me, forcing me to my knees on the hardwood stage. The cold steel of the handcuffs bit brutally into my wrists. I looked out at the thousands of peers who were staring at me, not with pity, but with absolute, unadulterated disgust.
Claire stepped forward, looking down at me as the agents hauled me to my feet. There was no hatred in her eyes. There was absolutely nothing at all. I was a ghost, completely exorcised from her reality.

"You made your choice, Bradley," she said coldly, turning her back on me before I could even formulate a pathetic apology. "Enjoy federal prison."
As they dragged me out of the ballroom, the flashing lights of the police cruisers reflecting off the Chicago pavement, I looked back one last time. Claire was surrounded by her board of directors, her lawyers, and the adoring press. The monsters of her past were permanently locked away, the fortress was impenetrable, and the silent architect was finally, permanently, at peace.
