Chapter 8 - The Trojan Horse

The trap was set, and the waiting was a masterclass in psychological endurance. For three weeks, I played the role of the desperate, drowning CEO perfectly. I leaked carefully doctored emails through Vanguard’s internal servers—servers I knew Bradley still had backdoor access to, because I was the one who had intentionally instructed IT not to close it.

I sat in the boardroom, surrounded by my executive team, projecting an aura of calculated stress. We were preparing for the annual Vanguard Investors Gala, a highly publicized event meant to assure our stakeholders that the transition of power had been seamless.

"Sterling Equities has officially filed a motion with the SEC, claiming we intentionally defrauded our shareholders regarding the South Loop project," our lead counsel, David, said, pacing the length of the mahogany table. "He claims to have un-redacted internal documents proving the foundation is structurally compromised and the financial projections were inflated by two hundred percent. Claire, if he goes public with this at the gala tonight, the stock will plummet. He will trigger a hostile takeover."

"Let him," I said, sipping my sparkling water.

The entire boardroom fell dead silent. David stared at me as if I had just lost my mind. "Claire, he has documents bearing Bradley's signature. He has leverage."

"He has garbage," I corrected softly, standing up and smoothing the lines of my tailored charcoal suit. "Before Bradley was ousted, he was desperate to secure a secondary line of credit to fund a condominium for his mistress. He drafted a set of fraudulent architectural reports, wildly exaggerating the South Loop's value to secure the mezzanine loan. When I took over, I discovered the fraud, quietly fired the corrupt architects, and completely restructured the foundation out of my own capital. The building is pristine. The financials are flawless."

"Then what does Sterling have?" Elena asked, her eyes narrowing in realization.

"He has the forged documents Bradley created to commit bank fraud," I smiled, a cold, predatory expression that caused the room’s temperature to drop. "Bradley thinks he just handed Sterling the key to my destruction. In reality, he just handed a federal prosecutor a signed confession of his own wire fraud, and he tied Sterling directly to the conspiracy. Tonight, we don't just defend Vanguard. We completely eradicate the competition."

I looked around at my stunned, brilliant team. "Get dressed, everyone. We have a gala to host."
