Chapter 12 - The Shadow Syndicate

Arthur Vance did not look like a man who operated in the shadows. He looked like an aristocrat. He walked into Claire’s office precisely at noon, wearing a bespoke three-piece suit that whispered of old European money. He was accompanied by two massive, silent men who radiated the specific, terrifying energy of highly paid mercenaries.

Claire did not stand up. She remained seated behind her father’s desk, projecting an aura of completely unbothered authority.

"Mr. Vance," Claire said, gesturing to the leather chair opposite her. "To what do I owe the pleasure of an unscheduled international visit?"

Arthur smiled, a cold, empty expression that didn't reach his pale blue eyes. He sat down, crossing his long legs. "I appreciate a woman who cuts to the chase. I’ll be brief, Ms. Donovan. Victor Sterling was a blunt instrument, but he was a highly profitable one. When you orchestrated his public arrest, the federal government seized his domestic accounts. Accounts that held a substantial amount of my family’s capital."

"That sounds like a terrible miscalculation on your part," Claire replied smoothly, her voice betraying zero emotion. "I suggest you take it up with the Department of Justice."

"I don't deal with bureaucrats," Arthur sneered softly. "I deal with the people responsible. You owe my syndicate two hundred million dollars. Since I know Vanguard Holdings is highly liquid following your recent stock surge, I am offering you a simple transaction. You will transfer thirty percent of Vanguard’s voting shares into a blind trust controlled by my holding company. In exchange, I will graciously allow you to keep your CEO title and your life’s work intact."

Claire stared at him, genuinely astounded by the sheer, unadulterated audacity of the extortion. "You are walking into my building and demanding I hand over a third of my empire to cover a bad bet you made with a corporate terrorist?"

"I am not making a demand, Claire. I am giving you a lifeline," Arthur whispered, leaning forward. "My syndicate does not litigate. We erase. If those shares are not transferred by Friday evening, I will unleash a digital firestorm that will render Vanguard Holdings completely radioactive. Your investors will flee, your servers will melt, and your flawless reputation will be buried under a mountain of fabricated, undeniable filth. Choose wisely."

Arthur stood up, buttoned his suit jacket, and walked out of the office, his mercenaries trailing silently behind him.

Claire remained completely still until the heavy glass doors clicked shut. She didn't tremble. She didn't panic. The woman who would have cowered in the face of a billionaire’s threat had been eradicated years ago.

She picked up her encrypted phone and dialed Elena.

"Cancel my afternoon meetings," Claire commanded, her voice dropping to a lethal, unwavering register. "And get me the contact information for the off-the-books cyber-mercenaries we kept on retainer during the South Loop audit. Arthur Vance wants to wage a digital war. Let's show him how Chicago plays the game."
