Chapter 7 - The Desperate Pawn

The air conditioning in my studio apartment had been broken for three weeks. I lay on a stained, secondhand mattress, staring at a water stain on the ceiling that looked suspiciously like the Vanguard Holdings logo. The heat was oppressive, heavy with the smell of cheap takeout and stale beer.

My phone vibrated on the peeling laminate nightstand. It wasn't a number I recognized. Usually, I ignored unknown calls—they were almost always debt collectors looking for the remnants of the life Claire had systematically dismantled. But something compelled me to answer.

"Bradley," a smooth, gravelly voice echoed through the cheap speaker. "My name is Victor Sterling. I believe we have a mutual interest in the structural integrity of Vanguard Holdings."

I sat up, the springs of the mattress groaning beneath my weight. Every real estate broker in Chicago knew Victor Sterling. He was ruthless, filthy rich, and completely devoid of morals. He was everything I had tried to be, before Claire had meticulously orchestrated my ruin.

"I don't work for Vanguard anymore, Mr. Sterling," I muttered, wiping the sweat from my forehead. "My ex-wife made sure of that."

"I am well aware of Claire’s aggressive restructuring," Sterling chuckled, a sound that sent a cold thrill down my spine. "But I also know that a man in your former position doesn't walk away without keeping a spare set of keys. I recently acquired the mezzanine debt on the South Loop project. Claire is trying to hide it, moving discretionary funds to cover the bleeding, but she’s vulnerable. I need the original, un-redacted architectural and financial projections you drafted before the divorce. If I can prove she misrepresented the asset's value to the board, I can trigger an emergency shareholder vote and force a hostile takeover."

My heart began to hammer against my ribs. This was it. This was the lifeline I had been praying for in this miserable, suffocating apartment.

"What's in it for me?" I asked, my voice trembling with a mix of desperation and renewed arrogance.

"I need a proxy on the inside during the transition," Sterling replied smoothly. "You give me the un-redacted files, and when I take Vanguard from her, I will install you as the Executive Vice President of Acquisitions. Complete with a seven-figure salary, a signing bonus, and the absolute pleasure of watching your ex-wife get dragged out of her own building by security."

I looked around my pathetic apartment. I thought about the cheap, chafing button-down shirts I wore to the logistics warehouse. I thought about the smug, untouchable look on Claire’s face on the cover of that magazine.

"I have a secure, encrypted hard drive hidden in a storage locker in the West Loop," I said, a cruel, vindictive smile stretching across my face. "It has everything you need to bury her. When and where do we meet?"
