Chapter 4 - The Echoes of Ruin

The days that followed were a descent into absolute hell.

I dragged my cardboard box out of the skyscraper and took a train back to the luxury downtown apartment I had been renting. When I arrived, my keycard didn't work there, either. A notice on the door informed me that the lease, which had been guaranteed by my former company, was terminated.

I sat on the sidewalk in the freezing rain and dialed my mother’s number. She answered on the first ring.

"Mom," I choked out, shivering violently. "I need a place to stay. They locked me out."

"You are not coming to my house, Daniel," my mother snapped, her voice trembling with rage. "Do you have any idea the humiliation I have endured today? Claire's email went to every member of the country club! Everyone knows you embezzled money for a cheap consultant. My friends are treating me like a pariah. I cannot be associated with you right now."

The line went dead.

I called Marcus, my supposed best friend. It went straight to voicemail. I later learned that Claire had offered generous retention bonuses to the entire executive team, provided they fully cooperated with the forensic audit against me. Marcus had turned over years of my private emails without a second thought to save his own skin.

I was completely, utterly isolated. The fortune, the status, the untouchable arrogance I had carried for a decade had evaporated in the span of a single afternoon.

Over the next six months, the federal investigations dismantled whatever was left of my life. The IRS hit me with massive penalties for undeclared, fraudulent income. To avoid prison time, I was forced to liquidate my personal savings, sell my cars, and empty my retirement accounts to pay the restitution and fines.

Tessa disappeared into the ether, scrubbing her social media and moving to another state to escape the radioactive fallout of the scandal. Every time I closed my eyes, I saw her walking out of the restaurant, leaving me with the bill for the champagne we had used to toast my destruction.
