Chapter 11 - The Invisible Siege

Peace is a beautiful, fragile illusion. When you spend your life building a fortress of glass and steel, you eventually realize that the higher you climb, the more the world wants to tear you down.

For three flawless years following the destruction of Silas Blackwood and my ex-husband, Daniel, my life with Julian was a masterclass in absolute supremacy. Vanguard Logistics had transcended its origins, evolving into a global sovereign entity that dictated the heartbeat of international trade. Our son, Leo, was now a bright, fiercely independent two-year-old who brought endless light into our Chicago penthouse.

We were untouchable. Or so I believed.

It was a crisp Tuesday morning in late November. I was standing in the command center of our new headquarters, wearing a tailored navy blazer, reviewing the real-time global shipping matrix. Julian was beside me, his hand resting warmly on the small of my back.

Without warning, the panoramic smart-screens surrounding us flashed a violent, aggressive crimson.

The global routing algorithms, which managed thousands of Vanguard vessels, suddenly fractured.

Julian’s relaxed demeanor vanished in a microsecond, replaced by the lethal, calculating protector I knew so well. "Eleanor, someone just hijacked the primary navigation grid."

Before I could issue a lockdown command, the central screen cleared. A live, encrypted video feed appeared, displaying a woman in her late sixties. She possessed silver hair, cold eyes, and the terrifying, unearned arrogance of European old money.

"Good morning, Eleanor," she purred, her British accent dripping with venom. "I am Vivienne Croft, head of the Sovereign Consortium. And as of three minutes ago, I control your oceans."
