Chapter 1 - The Depths of Depravity

“Is that…” I whispered, the words catching in my throat as my eyes traced the familiar, elegant lines of the older woman’s face in the photograph. I had never met her in person, but I had seen her society profile in the local philanthropic magazines.
Nathaniel Reed, a man who had navigated the darkest, most treacherous waters of Manhattan divorce law for three decades, looked entirely sickened. He nodded slowly, closing the file and resting his hands flat on the polished mahogany conference table.
“That is Marjorie Caldwell, Evangeline,” Nathaniel said, his voice dropping into a grim, quiet register. “Blair Caldwell’s mother. The private investigator followed Grayson for three weeks to build the standard infidelity portfolio. He expected to find your husband spending his afternoons with his twenty-four-year-old pregnant mistress. Instead, he documented Grayson spending his Tuesday and Thursday afternoons at the Pierre Hotel with a fifty-two-year-old woman. We ran the facial recognition against public society records last night to be absolutely certain.”
The air in the room became incredibly thin. The sheer, unadulterated depravity of it washed over me like freezing water.
Grayson was not just having a cliché affair with a younger woman. He was actively, simultaneously sleeping with his pregnant mistress and his mistress’s mother. Marjorie Caldwell, the woman who had calmly called me at 9:07 on a Thursday morning to demand I vacate my ancestral home to provide "stability" for her daughter, was intimately involved with the same man. She wasn't just an overbearing mother trying to secure a billionaire lifestyle for her grandchild. She was a co-conspirator, sharing a bed with the man she was moving into my house.
I leaned back in the heavy leather chair, staring at the ceiling as the nausea passed, replaced rapidly by an absolute, terrifying clarity.
“He really believes I am completely blind,” I said softly, a cold, hollow laugh escaping my lips. “He actually told them that the Greenwich estate belongs to him. He promised them a kingdom he doesn't even hold the keys to.”
“Grayson’s arrogance has entirely eclipsed his sanity,” Nathaniel agreed, pulling forward a thick stack of financial ledgers. “He has been operating as the CEO of Harlow Logistics for five years, but he conveniently forgot that the company’s operating capital is secured entirely by the Harlow Family Trust. Your trust. He leveraged fifty million dollars of corporate equity to finance a highly speculative commercial real estate venture in Dubai. A venture he privately assured the Caldwells would make him independently wealthy enough to leave you and maintain their lifestyle.”
“Can we call the loan?” I asked, my eyes snapping back to my attorney.
“We don't just have to call the loan, Evangeline,” Nathaniel smiled, a predatory, merciless expression. “According to Section 4 of your ironclad prenuptial agreement, which Grayson happily signed because he assumed you would never enforce it, any documented infidelity triggers an immediate forfeiture of all marital equity. Furthermore, the corporate bylaws allow the primary trust beneficiary to demand an immediate audit and recall of all unauthorized speculative leveraging. If we pull the capital, Grayson’s real estate venture collapses instantly. He will personally default on fifty million dollars by Monday morning.”
I looked back down at the pale pink baby shower invitation sitting on the conference table. A new beginning deserves a beautiful home.
“Draft the corporate recall, Nathaniel. Prepare the eviction notices, and finalize the absolute divorce petition,” I commanded, standing up and smoothing the skirt of my dress. “Do not file them today. Have your private process servers ready for Sunday afternoon at 4:00 PM.”

“You are going to let them hold the baby shower at your estate?” Nathaniel asked, raising an eyebrow in surprise.
“Oh, I’m not just going to let them hold it,” I smiled, picking up the envelope of photographs. “I am going to attend. It would be incredibly rude of me to miss the celebration of my husband’s new family.”
