Chapter 18 - The Fortress TestedThe storm hit on a Friday evening. It wasn’t just rain; it was a torrential, howling gale that battered the newly constructed walls of our 180-square-meter estate. But inside, it was dead silent. The Mác 250 concrete raft foundation absorbed the shock of the wind, and the soundproof, bullet-resistant glass kept the chaos of the outside world completely at bay.

Ethan had been called away to the secondary office to oversee the installation of a new, localized firewall. It was just me, Leo, and his nanny, Maria, in the house.

I was in the kitchen, pouring a glass of red wine, watching Leo build a tower out of wooden blocks on the heated marble floor. He laughed, a pure, innocent sound that made my heart swell. This was what I fought for. This was why I built the empire.

Suddenly, the lights flickered.

My head snapped up. We were on a localized, subterranean power grid with triple redundancies. The power didn't "flicker" here unless someone intentionally severed the primary and secondary lines.

My phone buzzed. A red alert flashed across the screen from the perimeter security AI.

BREACH DETECTED. SECTOR 4.

My blood ran instantly to ice. Vanguard.

I didn't panic. Panic was for victims. I was a predator.

"Maria!" I barked, my voice cutting through the quiet kitchen like a knife. "Take Leo. Go to the basement panic room immediately. Do not come out unless you hear my voice or Ethan's. Go!"

Maria, terrified but well-trained, scooped Leo into her arms and sprinted down the hallway. I waited until I heard the heavy, titanium-reinforced door of the panic room seal shut with a hydraulic hiss.

My family was safe. Now, it was time to defend my castle.

I walked into Ethan’s study and opened the biometric safe hidden behind a mahogany bookshelf. I pulled out a sleek, suppressed 9mm tactical handgun. It was heavy, cold, and profoundly comforting. I chambered a round, the metallic click sounding incredibly loud in the silent house.

I pulled up the security feeds on my tablet. There were six of them. Heavily armed mercenaries wearing tactical gear and night-vision goggles. They had bypassed the outer gate, but they were currently staring in confusion at the reinforced steel doors of the main entrance. They thought this was a standard luxury mansion. They didn't know they were trying to break into a military-grade bunker wrapped in modern architecture.

I watched as one of the men placed a breaching charge on the front door. He stepped back and detonated it.

The explosion rattled the windows, but when the smoke cleared, the door was barely scratched. The biometric locks held firm.

Fools, I thought.

I keyed my encrypted radio, tuning it to the external PA system.

"You are trespassing on private property," my voice boomed over the howling wind outside, cold and entirely devoid of fear. "Your explosives won't work. The glass is rated for armor-piercing rounds. The walls are reinforced concrete. You have thirty seconds to leave my property before I stop being polite."

The mercenaries scrambled, looking around for the source of the voice. The leader raised his assault rifle and fired a burst into the nearest security camera. My screen went static.

They were moving toward the rear patio—the only potential weak point where the glass panes were largest.

I gripped the 9mm, stepping into the shadows of the grand living room, my eyes fixed on the heavy glass doors. I was not going to hide. If they managed to break the glass, they would be met with lethal force. Nobody touches my home. Nobody touches my son.

Suddenly, the roar of a high-performance engine cut through the storm.

Headlights tore across the darkness outside. Ethan’s armored SUV smashed through the heavy brush, slamming directly into two of the mercenaries, sending them flying into the mud.

Ethan burst from the driver’s seat before the vehicle even fully stopped. He wasn't just a CEO tonight. He was a force of absolute, untethered violence.
