Chapter 4 - The Unveiling

The massive ballroom rapidly emptied, leaving only Blair, Marjorie, and a few deeply shocked catering staff members hovering near the kitchen doors.

I held the pink gift box out to Blair. She stared at it, her hands trembling violently, too terrified to take it.

“Open it, Blair,” I commanded, my voice dropping the polite pretense, revealing the absolute, freezing steel beneath. “Consider it a necessity for your new life.”

Blair reached out with shaking fingers, taking the box. She pulled the silk ribbon, lifted the lid, and reached inside.

There were no baby clothes. There were no silver rattles. There was only a thick stack of high-definition, 8x10 glossy photographs.

Blair looked at the top photograph. It was a clear, undeniable shot of Grayson kissing Marjorie outside the Pierre Hotel, his hands resting intimately on her waist. Blair’s breath hitched in her throat. She frantically shuffled to the next photo. Marjorie and Grayson entering a private elevator together. The next photo. Marjorie and Grayson in the back of a town car.

The silence in the room was absolute, shattered only by the sound of Blair gasping for air as if she were actively drowning.

“Mom?” Blair whispered, her voice cracking, her eyes wide with a horrified, agonizing realization. She looked up from the photos, staring at her mother as if she had suddenly morphed into a monster. “Mom... what is this? What were you doing with Grayson?”

Marjorie’s face turned the color of wet ash. She stumbled backward, bumping into the cake table, her hands flying to her mouth. “Blair... sweetheart, it’s not what it looks like... he told me he needed advice... it was just—”

“He was sleeping with you?!” Blair screamed, hurling the stack of photographs directly at her mother’s chest. The glossy images scattered across the expensive marble floor. “I am carrying his child, and you were sleeping with him?! You told me he was leaving his wife for me!”

“He is!” Marjorie shrieked defensively, completely unhinged, tears of sheer panic ruining her expensive makeup. “I was securing our future! He was going to give us the estate! He promised me!”

“He promised you both exactly what you wanted to hear so he could maintain absolute control over two incredibly gullible, greedy women,” I stated flawlessly, watching the Caldwell women mentally and emotionally destroy each other in my ballroom. “He played you both, and you were both arrogant enough to believe you could steal my life.”

Right on cue, the heavy mahogany front doors of the estate burst open.

Grayson ran into the grand foyer, breathless, his suit jacket unbuttoned, his face a mask of absolute, unadulterated terror. He had clearly received the frantic text messages from the fleeing guests. He expected to run in and somehow manage the situation, to gaslight his way out of the confrontation.

He skidded to a halt in the entryway of the ballroom, looking at the scattered pink balloons, the weeping, hysterical pregnant mistress, the terrified mother-in-law, and the glossy photographs covering the marble floor.

Finally, his eyes locked onto me.

“Evangeline,” Grayson choked out, the charming, manipulative billionaire completely stripped away, leaving only a desperate, cornered coward.

“You’re just in time, Grayson,” I smiled, stepping over the photographs to stand in front of him. “The baby shower was just wrapping up.”
