Chapter 10 - The Sovereign Crown

I stepped out from behind the steel island, my silk robe immaculate, the strobe lights casting long, sharp shadows across my face. I looked down at the man who had once promised to love me, currently weeping in a puddle of his own pathetic failure.

"You thought you could build a parallel life in my sanctuary," I whispered, my voice echoing with lethal, uncompromising authority over the hum of the alarms. "You thought you were the king of the board. But you forgot that I am the one who owns the lights."

The heavy mahogany doors of the estate burst open. A tactical team of armed federal agents, guided by the GPS coordinates I had forwarded earlier, flooded the room. Their laser sights cut through the dim light directly onto Grayson’s chest.

"Grayson Harlow!" the lead agent barked, slamming my ex-husband face-first onto the floor. "You are under arrest for conspiracy to commit wire fraud, corporate extortion, and international money laundering!"

I watched without a single ounce of pity as the last remaining venomous root of my past was dragged out of my home in heavy steel handcuffs, screaming as his entire existence collapsed into absolute ruin.

Six months later, the crisp spring breeze swept across the sprawling, manicured lawns of my estate. The toxic fallout of Grayson and his syndicates was nothing but a footnote in the incredible, unstoppable history of my life.

I stood on the terrace, the golden afternoon sunlight warming my skin. The magnificent Japanese-style roof of my home provided a profound sense of grounding. The nightmare was truly, finally over.

Nathaniel walked up behind me, wrapping his strong arms around my waist and pulling me back against his solid, comforting chest. He rested his chin on my shoulder, looking out at the endless horizon of the Long Island Sound.

"The final SEC clearances just came through," Nathaniel murmured, pressing a soft kiss to my temple. "The company is completely secure under your name. We are untouchable."

"It's perfect," I smiled, leaning my head against his shoulder, listening to the steady, powerful rhythm of his heart.

Nathaniel turned me around to face him. His dark eyes softened with a profound, overwhelming love that still took my breath away. He gently lifted my left hand, pulling a sleek velvet box from his jacket. Inside was a stunning, custom-cut diamond ring.

"You built a fortress, Evangeline," Nathaniel said, his voice thick with raw, beautiful emotion. "But I want to build a forever. Will you marry me?"

May you like

"We built a kingdom, Nathaniel," I corrected softly, stepping up on my toes to look deeply into his eyes as I slid the ring onto my finger. "And yes. Always yes."

As I pulled my brilliant, fiercely loyal partner in for a deep, passionate kiss, surrounded by the beautiful, indestructible life we had bled to build, the world around us crystallized into absolute perfection. I had walked through hell. But I had not burned. I had taken the fire and used it to forge a titanium spine, rewriting the rules of the game until my beautiful, victorious world was finally, eternally at peace.
