Chapter 1 - The Navy Jacket

We walked out of the photography studio into the crisp Chicago air.

Daniel followed us to the parking lot, still holding the new navy jacket.

He tried to hand me his credit card to pay the photographer.

I didn't take it.

"It's already paid for," I told him.

He frowned, accustomed to me using the joint account to manage every detail of our lives.

"From my personal account," I clarified.

Daniel didn't notice the significance of that shift.

He simply checked his watch, muttered something about needing to get back to the office, and climbed into his Range Rover.

I watched him drive away.

Then I looked at Emma and Caleb in the rearview mirror.

They didn't look disappointed.

They looked relieved.

That night, while Daniel slept soundly beside me, I opened my laptop.

I forwarded the private investigator’s photographs to my attorney.

Then I looked at the calendar.

Daniel’s company was preparing for a massive corporate merger in exactly three weeks.

And I knew exactly who was in charge of the public relations for it.
