Chapter 10 - The Unbreakable EmpireThe final court date was merely a formality, a ceremonial closing of a tomb.

I walked into the family courthouse wearing a sharp, tailored white suit. I did not wear black. I was not in mourning. I was celebrating an absolute, unmitigated triumph.
Daniel was escorted into the courtroom in a standard-issue orange jumpsuit, his hands cuffed in front of him. His trial for federal tax evasion was pending, but he was currently being held without bail as a flight risk. The man who had once obsessed over his expensive haircuts and bespoke Italian shoes looked hollow, gray, and completely broken.
He didn't even look at me. He couldn't.
The judge, a stern woman with no patience for white-collar criminals, reviewed the final settlement drafted by Diane.
"Mr. Sterling, you have waived your right to contest this division of assets," the judge stated, her voice echoing in the wood-paneled room. "The petitioner is granted full ownership of all primary real estate, sole control of the children's trust funds, and you are ordered to pay restitution for the marital funds embezzled during the affair. Do you understand these terms?"
"Yes, your honor," Daniel croaked, his voice cracking.
"Then this divorce is finalized," the judge declared, striking her gavel with a definitive, satisfying crack.
I stood up. I didn't say a word to Daniel. I simply turned my back on him and walked out of the courtroom, leaving him to be escorted back to his concrete cell by the armed bailiffs.
When I pushed through the heavy double doors of the courthouse and stepped out into the brilliant, blinding afternoon sunlight, my lungs filled with the crisp, clean air of total freedom.
Emma and Caleb were waiting for me at the bottom of the marble steps. They both smiled brightly, rushing forward to hug me. They didn't ask about their father. They had already moved on.
Standing a few feet away, leaning against the hood of a sleek, black town car, was Julian. He held a massive bouquet of white roses, a proud, radiant smile on his handsome face.
I walked down the steps, my children flanking me, and met the man who admired the fire I had walked through.
Julian handed me the roses and kissed me deeply, ignoring the bustling crowds of the city around us.
"To new beginnings," Julian murmured, his green eyes shining with unwavering devotion.
"To unbreakable empires," I corrected softly, smiling up at him.
We climbed into the back of the car, the engine purring smoothly as we merged into the endless, pulsing energy of Manhattan. I looked out the tinted window at the towering glass skyscrapers, feeling a profound, unshakeable peace settle deep into my bones.
I had been betrayed. I had been lied to. I had been pushed to the absolute edge of my sanity.
But fire does not just destroy; it forges. They had tried to burn my life to the ground, but they had failed to realize that they were dealing with a woman made of steel.

The coward was locked in a cage. The mistress was a forgotten ghost.
I was victorious, I was in love, and my reign was just beginning.
