Chapter 8 - The Mistress and the MartyrRevenge is a dish best served in public, under the bright, unforgiving lights of high society.

Two weeks after the brutal deposition, I attended the annual charity gala for the Children's Hospital. It was an event I had chaired for five years, a room filled with the most influential politicians, CEOs, and socialites in the city. I wore a stunning, backless emerald-green gown that commanded attention, my head held high. I was no longer the betrayed wife; I was a titan who had flawlessly executed her own liberation.

I was standing near the champagne tower, chatting with a group of female executives, when the atmosphere in the room suddenly shifted.

Vanessa had crashed the gala.

She looked completely unhinged. The sleek, polished PR consultant who had smirked at me across my own dining room table was gone. She was wearing a dress that looked a season too old, her hair was chaotic, and her eyes burned with a manic, desperate fury.

She marched directly toward me, ignoring the security guards trying to intercept her.

"You!" Vanessa screamed, her voice echoing over the string quartet, bringing the entire gala to a dead, suffocating silence.

The executives around me stepped back, but I didn't move an inch. I took a delicate sip of my champagne, looking at her with absolute, clinical detachment.

"You stole my home!" Vanessa shrieked, pointing a trembling finger at my face. "You froze my accounts! I have nothing because of you!"

"Security," a voice called out, but I raised my hand, silencing them.

"Let her speak," I said smoothly, my voice carrying across the silent ballroom. I looked at Vanessa with profound, untouchable pity. "I didn't steal your home, Vanessa. I simply reclaimed stolen property. Daniel embezzled my family's money to buy your affection. I just took my money back."

"You ruined my reputation!" she cried, tears of mascara streaming down her face. "No firm in the city will hire me! I'm blacklisted because of the scandal you caused at the dinner party!"

"I didn't cause the scandal, Vanessa. I merely turned on the lights," I replied, stepping toward her. The sheer gravity of my presence made her physically stumble backward. "You built your career by sleeping with married executives and preying on other women's families. You thought you could come into my home, sit at my table, and mock me in secret."

I tilted my head, looking at the pathetic, broken woman who had thought she was untouchable.

"You played a very dangerous game with a woman who is much smarter than you," I whispered, though the silence in the room ensured everyone heard it. "You thought you were stealing a king. But you just bought a parasite. And now, you get to live with the consequences of your own greed."

Vanessa opened her mouth to scream again, but a tall, imposing man stepped out of the crowd.

It was Julian Vance, the lead investor from the fateful dinner party. He looked immaculate in a tailored tuxedo, radiating lethal authority.

"Ms. Thorne," Julian said, his voice a low, dangerous rumble. "You are trespassing at a private event. If you do not leave this instant, I will personally see to it that you are arrested for harassment."

Vanessa looked around the room. She saw the disgust, the judgment, and the absolute lack of sympathy on the faces of the city's elite. She had completely humiliated herself. Sobbing hysterically, she turned and ran out of the ballroom, her heels clicking frantically against the marble floor.

Julian turned to me, offering a polite, impressed smile.

"You handle pests with remarkable grace," Julian murmured, handing me a fresh glass of champagne.

"I find that if you expose a cockroach to the light, it usually scurries away on its own," I smiled, clinking my glass against his.

The gala resumed, but the hierarchy had been permanently rewritten. I was the undisputed queen of the board.
