Chapter 2 - The Morning of Ashes

I slept perfectly that night in the luxury suite of a downtown hotel, my children safely tucked into the adjoining room.

Grant and Tessa spent the night in the master bedroom, celebrating their supposed victory, assuming my departure was just a temporary, hormone-induced retreat. Grant genuinely believed he had won. He believed the sprawling, six-million-dollar estate was his, simply because he had lived in it for nine years.

He had entirely forgotten the fine print.

At 8:00 a.m. the next morning, my lead attorney, Marcus, filed an emergency ex parte injunction with the family court, utilizing the audio recording of Grant's cruel, calculated ambush to secure immediate, temporary sole custody of Owen, Lily, and my unborn child.

At 9:00 a.m., Grant’s personal bank cards declined at a local coffee shop.

When my father’s real estate development firm originally purchased our marital home, it wasn't a wedding gift. It was placed into an irrevocable trust solely in my name, meant to protect my assets from exactly the kind of man Grant turned out to be. Grant had paid the utility bills, which made him feel like the king of the castle, but he owned absolutely nothing but the clothes in his closet.

My phone vibrated with a frantic text from my mother-in-law.

Mara, the bank just called Grant! All his corporate cards are frozen! What are you doing?! You are tearing this family apart over a misunderstanding!

I didn't reply. I simply forwarded the audio recording of her son moving his mistress in to the entire extended family, his country club circle, and the board of directors at his firm.

The gaslighting was over. I was controlling the narrative now.
