Chapter 9 - The Custody TrapIt was a rainy Sunday, the kind of day designed for staying indoors.

It was Grant’s supervised visitation weekend. He was allowed exactly four hours with Owen and Lily at a neutral, public location—a high-end indoor family entertainment center—supervised by a court-appointed monitor. Leo, being a newborn, remained safely at home with me.
I sat at a corner table in the café overlooking the play area, sipping an espresso and reviewing a new service contract for page growth on my tablet.
Grant sat at a table near the playground. He looked hollowed out. His hair was thinning, his posture was slumped, and his eyes were completely devoid of light. Owen and Lily were playing in the arcade, occasionally waving at him, but keeping a safe, instinctive distance. They had adapted to the new normal beautifully. They no longer feared his explosive temper, because they knew he had absolutely no power left.
Grant stood up and walked over to my table. The court monitor took a step forward, but I raised a hand, signaling it was fine.
"Evelyn," Grant said, his voice a raspy whisper. "Please."
I didn't look up from my tablet. "Please what, Grant?"
"I'm being evicted again. The sanctions from the court case... my wages are being garnished. I have fifty dollars in my checking account. I’m sleeping in my car next week." He swallowed hard, tears welling in his eyes. "You won. You destroyed me. Just... release the garnishment. Let me breathe. For the kids' sake."
I finally looked up. I looked at the man who had spent years gaslighting me, manipulating my reality, and treating me like an unpaid servant while he paraded his mistress around town. I remembered the nights I spent crying on the bathroom floor, wondering if I was crazy.
"For the kids' sake?" I repeated softly. "The kids' sake is exactly why the garnishment stays. Every single dollar that comes out of your paycheck goes directly into an irrevocable trust for their college tuition. You are finally providing for your children, Grant. You should be proud."

"Evelyn, I have nothing!" he begged, his voice cracking.
"You have exactly what you earned," I replied, my voice as hard and unyielding as the Mac 250 concrete currently curing under my new estate. "Visitation is over in ten minutes. Say goodbye to your children."
