Chapter 7 - Concrete ConsequencesThe construction site for my new estate was a masterpiece of modern engineering, situated on a sprawling, multi-acre lot overlooking the Pacific. I wasn't just building a house; I was building an impenetrable fortress for Leo, Owen, and Lily.

I stood on the edge of the excavated dirt in a crisp white blazer and hard hat, reviewing the blueprints with my lead contractor, David.

"We’re going with the continuous raft foundation," David explained, pointing to the massive trench. "Given the soil density and the coastal proximity, standard strip foundations won't cut it. We’re doing intensive sand compaction, followed by a solid pour of Mac 250 graded concrete. It will withstand earthquakes, mudslides, and anything else California throws at it."

"Perfect," I nodded. "I want this foundation to be indestructible."

"Evelyn!"

The shrill, frantic voice echoed across the construction site. I didn't have to turn around to know who it was.

Grant was storming past the temporary chain-link fence, his cheap suit covered in construction dust, his face purple with rage. He looked ten years older, completely stripped of the arrogant tech-bro swagger he used to weaponize against me. Two of my private security guards instantly stepped in front of him, crossing their arms.

"You can't build this!" Grant screamed, trying to peer around the massive chests of my security detail. "My lawyer filed the injunction! This land is partially mine! I know you used our old Agribank consumer loan to secure the zoning permits!"

I slowly turned around, adjusting my sunglasses. I walked over to him, stopping just out of arm's reach.

"Grant, you are trespassing on a private, active construction site," I said, my voice completely flat and devoid of emotion. "And for the record, the consumer loan you're referring to was entirely exhausted three years ago. I pulled the bank records."

His eyes darted nervously. "You... you don't have access to those records."

"I have access to everything," I whispered, stepping closer. "I know that you took that overdraft facility and funneled it into a 5% monthly revenue-sharing scheme for a network of fake social media news channels. Channels that were demonetized for violating terms of service. You didn't invest in this land, Grant. You gambled marital funds on a digital Ponzi scheme, and you lost. And I’m submitting the IP logs and the failed Memorandum of Understanding you signed to the judge tomorrow."

The blood completely drained from his face. His knees physically buckled.

"Security," I said, not breaking eye contact with my pathetic ex-husband. "Escort Mr. Sterling off my property. If he resists, press charges."
