Chapter 2 - The Foundational Code

Julian stumbled backward out of the recovery room, utterly destroyed, clutching his phone like a lifeline. He thought he was walking away to fight a standard, messy divorce. He thought I was just another Silicon Valley wife—a beautiful, compliant accessory who managed the charity galas and decorated the Palo Alto estate while he built the future.

He had completely forgotten the past.

Seven years ago, Julian’s tech empire, Vance Innovations, didn't exist. We were working out of a cramped garage in San Jose. I was a PhD candidate in machine learning. Julian was a charismatic, ambitious salesman. I was the one who wrote the proprietary artificial intelligence algorithm that mapped deep-learning neural networks. It was my code that caught the eye of the venture capitalists. It was my genius that secured the first fifty million dollars in seed funding.

Julian had begged me to let him be the face of the company. "Investors want an aggressive frontman, Clara," he had said, kissing my neck in our cheap apartment. "Let me handle the sharks. You just keep building the magic."

I agreed, because I loved him. But I wasn't stupid.

When we incorporated, I didn't transfer the intellectual property rights to Vance Innovations. I kept the core patents registered under an anonymous holding company in my maiden name, granting Julian's corporation an exclusive, revocable licensing agreement. Julian, who hated reading the fine print of legal contracts, had signed the paperwork without a second thought.

For seven years, he paraded around on the covers of tech magazines, accepting awards for "his" visionary software, completely forgetting that he was merely renting his empire from his wife.

And according to the morality and fiduciary clauses hidden deep within that foundational contract, bringing a mistress to Dubai on the corporate expense account while his wife was in labor constituted a catastrophic breach of agreement.

By the time I carried Leo out of the hospital three days later, Julian’s entire universe was already collapsing.
