Chapter 5 - The Master Algorithm

One year later.
The warm California sun poured through the massive windows of my corner office at Apex Intelligence, the new, completely independent tech conglomerate I had launched under my own name. I stood by the glass, holding a cup of coffee, looking out over the sprawling Silicon Valley campus that I had built on my own terms.
The heavy glass door clicked open, and a bright, joyful giggle echoed through the room.
I turned around, and a radiant smile broke across my face. Harper was walking in, holding one-year-old Leo. He had a mop of dark curls, bright, intelligent eyes, and a laugh that filled every empty space in my heart.
"Someone insisted on crashing your 2:00 p.m. strategy meeting," Harper laughed, setting Leo down on the plush carpet. He immediately toddled over to me, wrapping his little arms tightly around my legs.
"He is the only person on earth who can interrupt my schedule," I smiled, scooping my son up and pressing a kiss to his cheek.
Julian’s divorce had been finalized six months ago. Facing absolute financial ruin and the threat of prison for corporate fraud, he had surrendered without a fight. He signed away all parental rights to avoid paying child support he could no longer afford. He was currently working as a mid-level consultant for a dying regional firm, his name entirely erased from the industry he used to rule.
He had looked at me in that hospital room and assumed I was a weak, exhausted mother who would quietly accept his disrespect to save her marriage. He thought the title of "Wife" meant I was a subordinate.
He didn't realize that a mother’s love is the most dangerous, powerful algorithm on earth.

I held my beautiful, perfect son against my chest, looking out at the empire that finally bore my name. Julian had thought he was walking away to write a thrilling new chapter in his life.
He didn't know I was the one who controlled the code.
