Chapter 9 - The Ballistic Shield

Thorne knew he had minutes before international authorities swarmed his penthouse. In a final, desperate act of vengeance, he activated a sleeper hit squad he had already stationed in the valley.

The perimeter alarms of my estate suddenly shrieked, a high-pitched wail that sliced right through the stormy night.

Through the internal security monitors, Harper and I watched six heavily armed mercenaries wearing tactical gear and night-vision goggles storm across the vast green lawn. They had been sent to execute the woman who was currently burning their global syndicate to the ground.

"Get Leo into the panic room," I ordered Harper, my voice entirely devoid of fear. "Lock the steel bulkheads. Do not open them for anyone but me."

I killed the main power breaker, plunging the entire two-story estate into pitch-black darkness. I stood my ground in the twelve-square-meter kitchen. The space wasn't just designed for culinary perfection; I had engineered it as a tactical fatal funnel. The solid 304 stainless-steel cabinets provided flawless ballistic cover, and the tempered glass was completely shatter-proof.

The mercenaries kicked through the heavy wooden front doors, their laser sights cutting through the dark foyer. They moved slowly, expecting to find a terrified, helpless CEO. They didn't realize they had just walked into a trap designed by a woman who anticipated every angle of attack.

As the first two mercenaries entered the kitchen, I used the reflection of the moonlight against the steel refrigerator to perfectly track their movements. I triggered the estate’s internal security countermeasures from my mobile device. Blinding, high-intensity strobe lights mounted in the ceiling violently flashed to life, accompanied by a deafening, high-frequency acoustic alarm.

The mercenaries dropped to their knees, clutching their ears, completely blinded and disoriented by the sensory overload.

Before they could recover or fire a single wild shot, I triggered the localized Halon gas suppression system I had installed in the ceiling. The dense, oxygen-depleting gas flooded the room, instantly choking the mercenaries into unconsciousness. Within sixty seconds, the physical threat to my family was permanently dismantled on the very floor I had built to protect us, without a single bullet being fired.
