Rocco stepped down temporarily as chairman of the Moretti Foundation.
The decision shocked everyone.
Adrian had planned to force him out.
Rocco did it voluntarily.
But under independent oversight, not Adrian’s control.
Julia remained museum director while an outside committee reviewed collection management.
She did not thank Rocco.
“I should’ve caught the substitutions earlier.”
“You tried to raise problems.”
“Not the same thing.”
They were both learning to stop confusing partial responsibility with total blame.
At home, Mia struggled in ways Rocco had not expected.
She wore her glasses during the day.
At night, she placed them beneath her pillow.
Rocco asked why.
“So Celeste can’t take them.”
His chest tightened.
“Celeste isn’t coming back.”
“Uncle Adrian?”
“No.”
Mia looked unconvinced.
Words were no longer enough.
Rocco changed the house routine.
No business meetings after Mia’s bedtime.
No family associates entering without security records.
He began eating breakfast with her instead of having staff carry messages between rooms.
Small changes.
Embarrassingly basic ones.
Rachel reminded him that the legal and financial problems would take months.
Recovered messages helped.
So did the fraudulent board drafts.
But Adrian claimed they were contingency planning.
He argued that Rocco verbally approved unusual financing and later turned against him.
Celeste’s cooperation could damage Adrian’s defense.
But Celeste had lied repeatedly.
Her credibility was weak.
The missing original artifacts remained critical.
Without recovering them, proving the full extent of the fraud would be harder.
Then Julia found an overlooked clue.
One missing instrument had been professionally photographed for the museum catalog two weeks before it disappeared.
The metal base contained a tiny restoration mark invisible in normal display lighting.
If the object appeared in a private collection, they could identify it.
Julia contacted legitimate auction houses and insurers through counsel.
No result.
Then an insurer flagged a recent application from a private collection in Connecticut.
The applicant wanted coverage for several historical scientific instruments.
One photograph showed the restoration mark.
The policy applicant was not Adrian.
It was a holding company controlled by an old Moretti business associate.
Rocco knew the man well.
He had attended Mia’s christening.
