Chapter 8

Rocco made the decision Adrian had counted on him never making.
He notified the museum board, lenders, insurer, and outside authorities that approvals bearing his name might be fraudulent.
Rachel warned him what that meant.
“They will examine you.”
“They should.”
“They may freeze transactions.”
“Fine.”
“You may lose control of the foundation temporarily.”
Rocco looked toward Mia’s replacement glasses resting beside her crayons.
“Do it.”
The disclosure cost millions within a week.
A lender suspended a credit facility.
Two expansion projects stopped.
Donors demanded independent oversight.
The museum postponed a major exhibit.
Julia had to tell employees there might be budget cuts.
Nobody applauded Rocco for choosing transparency.
That was not why he did it.
Adrian reacted immediately.
His attorney accused Rocco of inventing fraud to justify removing him.
Then Adrian sent Rocco a private message.
You really want strangers opening every Moretti file?
Rocco did not answer.
Another arrived.
Think about what Mia inherits if you destroy the name.
That one angered him more.
For decades, the Moretti name had justified secrecy.
Now Adrian was using Rocco’s daughter as another reason to protect it.
Rocco forwarded both messages to Rachel.
Celeste reacted differently.
She asked for another meeting.
This time she arrived without an attorney at first, then agreed to wait until one came.
“I can help you.”
Rocco said nothing.
“I know where Adrian kept copies.”
“Why now?”
“Because he’s blaming everything on me.”
That sounded believable.
“And because?”
Celeste looked at her empty ring finger.
“You’re really not taking me back.”
“No.”
Her eyes filled.
Rocco did not soften.
“I thought if Adrian took more control, you’d have time for us.”
“You helped him frame me.”
“I didn’t understand that part at first.”
“At first.”
She looked down.
Again that phrase.
“When did you understand?”
“Two months ago.”
“And you continued.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because by then I owed him.”
Financially.
Morally.
Practically.
Adrian had refinanced part of Celeste’s debt using one of the same shell entities.
If he fell, creditors would reach her too.
She had chosen deeper participation because walking away became more expensive every month.
Then Celeste said something that changed Rocco’s attention.
“Adrian has another warehouse.”
“Where?”
“I don’t know.”
“What’s in it?”
She looked toward Rachel.
“The things he actually moved.”
Julia’s face tightened.
Until that moment, everyone had assumed the museum artifacts were safe because the displayed pieces remained in place.
May you like
Celeste shook her head.
“They’re not the originals.”
