Chapter 12

The confrontation happened at Rachel’s office.

Adrian arrived with two attorneys.

Celeste came with hers.

Rocco sat across from them.

No bodyguards.

No family capos.

No theatrical audience.

Rachel placed the Connecticut insurance application on the table.

Adrian looked at it and smiled faintly.

“You think that proves I stole anything?”

“No,” Rocco said.

“Good.”

“It proves you weren’t working alone.”

The smile faded.

Celeste looked at Adrian.

“You told me nobody else knew.”

Adrian ignored her.

Rocco continued.

“You planned to remove me.”

“You were destroying the organization.”

“With what?”

“Your obsession with pretending we’re respectable businessmen.”

Rocco almost laughed.

Adrian leaned forward.

“You inherited something built on fear and started running it like a corporate retreat.”

“And that bothered you.”

“You stopped listening.”

That part was true.

Just not in the way Adrian meant.

Adrian wanted the old hierarchy.

Family authority.

Private deals.

Loyalty above scrutiny.

Rocco had begun changing after Mia was born.

Celeste spoke quietly.

“You told me he’d just leave the businesses.”

Adrian looked at her.

“You believed what you needed to believe.”

Her face changed.

“You used my debt.”

“You came to me.”

“I asked for help.”

“And I helped.”

Rocco watched the alliance split in real time.

He asked Celeste one question.

“Why Mia?”

She looked down.

“She saw Adrian.”

“That doesn’t explain hitting her.”

Celeste struggled to answer.

“She kept saying she would tell you.”

“She’s four.”

“I know.”

“You crushed the glasses she needs to see.”

“I know.”

Her voice broke.

“I was terrified.”

“Of me?”

“Of losing everything.”

There it was.

Adrian feared losing power.

Celeste feared losing security.

Both had decided Mia’s fear was cheaper.

Rocco looked at Adrian.

“What did she really see?”

Adrian said nothing.

Celeste finally answered.

“The night before the museum reception, she saw him photographing your signature pages.”

Rocco waited.

“And?”

“She saw the board resolution.”

A four-year-old could not read it.

But she recognized Rocco’s photograph printed at the top.

Then Adrian crossed it out with a black marker while joking with Celeste.

Mia remembered that.

“Daddy was crossed out.”

That was why Celeste panicked.

May you like

Not because Mia understood the crime.

Because she had seen enough to make Rocco ask the right questions.
